UK duty on vacuum-insulated growlers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 9617 covers complete vacuum flasks and other vacuum vessels, and parts other than glass inners. Vacuum-insulated growlers fall within this product family. The table shows growler configurations using the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied tariff record lists 0% duty for goods from China under 9617 00 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. Zero customs duty does not remove food contact responsibilities.

Confirm the actual construction through finding your commodity code. A single-walled beer jug is not a vacuum vessel and is classified by its material. See the wider vacuum flask guide for related products.

Specify the growler, closure and intended drink

Specify usable capacity, mouth opening, inner steel grade, lid and seal materials, handle fixing, finish and packaging. State whether the growler is intended for still drinks or carbonated beer. Ask for evidence supporting the proposed use; a vacuum wall alone does not establish suitability for containing carbonation.

Confirm with the relevant food safety authority the applicable requirements for preventing constituents from migrating into drinks in quantities that could endanger health. Request migration reports covering the finished growler and its drink-contact components, with conditions matching the intended drink, storage and cleaning. Use the food contact materials guide to brief the factory.

Products should only be sold after their compliance with product safety regulations has been demonstrated appropriately. Agree the cold-retention test method, starting temperature, ambient conditions and acceptance criteria before production. Ask how the base vacuum seal is made and whether solder or getter material is used.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 500 vacuum-insulated growlers under 9617 00 00 00, invoiced at £6,900 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,400, so it is £1,880. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Body and vacuum: compare dimensions and construction with the approved sample, inspect internal welds and repeat the agreed cold-retention test on production samples.

Closure and seals: check thread engagement or latch operation, seal seating and leakage when filled, inverted and laid on its side. For carbonated use, have suitable testing arranged against the agreed use conditions.

Handle and finish: check the loaded handle and its fixings, dents, coating adhesion and logo position. Confirm the base seal is covered and that no sealing material is exposed.

Cleaning and documents: check access to the interior, removal and refitting of seals, residual odour and any dishwasher claim. Match material records and reports to the delivered product at quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A growler can resemble the approved sample while losing its vacuum, leaking through a badly seated gasket or developing a loose handle. Coatings can chip, and seals can taint the drink. Check production samples after transport as well as before dispatch.

A lid that holds still water does not establish suitability for carbonated beer. Avoid approving that use from a generic leak test or an unrelated report. Ask the factory to identify the tested body, closure and seal combination, and agree cleaning instructions that buyers can follow.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on vacuum-insulated growlers from China?

The supplied tariff record, read on 30 September 2026, lists 0% duty under 9617 00 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can a vacuum-insulated growler hold carbonated beer?

Specify carbonated use explicitly and ask for evidence covering the actual body, closure and seals. Vacuum insulation and a still-water leak test alone do not establish suitability.

What food contact documents should I request?

Request the inner steel grade, lid and seal materials, and migration reports covering the finished product under conditions matching the intended drink and use.

How do I check a growler's cold-retention claim?

Agree the starting temperature, ambient conditions, test duration and acceptance criteria. Repeat the factory's method on production samples and compare the results with the packaging claim.
