Sourcing under-cabinet radios from China

Under-cabinet radios from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant mains and battery-operable lines of heading 8527. Before sale in Great Britain, they must meet the radio equipment essential requirements. Specify the mounting kit and test reception with the radio installed. Cambridge China Bridge sources under-cabinet radios.

Zero duty on relevant under-cabinet radios

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8527 covers broadcast receivers, including receivers combined with sound recording or reproduction equipment or a clock. Under-cabinet mounting does not define a separate tariff line. Select the line by power capability and combined functions.

All the relevant lines shown carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is generally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual model specification. A battery that only preserves the clock does not establish that the receiver can operate without external power. For the wider heading, see radios and DAB receivers.

Specify the cabinet fit and installed reception

Agree the cabinet underside material, mounting-hole positions, bracket shape, spacers, screw suitability and clearance for doors and controls. Specify body dimensions, antenna routing, cable exit and how the radio releases from its bracket. Decide whether the unit uses mains power, an adapter or batteries, and distinguish clock backup from battery-powered listening.

Specify DAB, DAB+ and FM reception, station presets, display dimming, clock retention, kitchen timer and any Bluetooth playback. Approve a sample mounted beneath a representative cabinet in the UK. Compare reception with a reference radio at the same location, and check that controls and the display remain usable from the worktop.

Broadcast receivers fall under the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017; ask the relevant authority to confirm the safety, electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum requirements for your model. Check CE or UKCA marking and model-specific reports and the declaration of conformity. These radios also fall within hazardous-substance rules for electrical equipment. Ask for corresponding compliance evidence. WEEE producers must register annually; confirm your registration route before sale.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 3,000 under-cabinet clock radios without separate sound playback under 8527 92 00 00, invoiced at £27,000 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £29,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,200, so it is £5,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Mounting: fit sampled units to the agreed cabinet material using the supplied bracket, spacers and screws. Check secure engagement, screw penetration, door clearance and access for removal.

Reception and sound: scan the specified UK broadcasts with the antenna in its installed position. Check presets, volume, distortion and vibration transmitted through the cabinet.

Power and controls: check the agreed UK plug, adapter rating, cable routing, buttons and timer. Interrupt power and verify the agreed behaviour of the clock and station memory.

Documents and labels: match the model on the unit, adapter, reports and declaration. Check CE or UKCA marking, the crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol and English mounting and safety instructions during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A sample tested loose on a bench can conceal poor reception after mounting, awkward antenna routing or cabinet vibration. Brackets may not suit a recessed cabinet underside, and supplied screws may penetrate the cabinet floor. Check the complete installed assembly before approving production.

Clock backup can be mistaken for battery-powered listening. Other problems include missing spacers, inaccessible buttons, a display that is hard to read from below and lost presets after a power cut. Record the approved mounting kit and power-loss behaviour in the purchase specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on under-cabinet radios from China?

The relevant mains and battery-operable lines of heading 8527 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff facts. No trade remedies, suspensions or import controls are listed for those lines. Import VAT is generally 20%.

Do under-cabinet radios need CE or UKCA marking?

Broadcast radios fall under the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017. For Great Britain, check CE or UKCA marking, the declaration of conformity and evidence covering the exact model's safety, electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum performance.

What should I check in the mounting kit?

Check bracket engagement, spacers, cabinet material, screw penetration and door clearance. Mount the sample with its antenna and power cable routed as intended, then check reception, sound and access to controls.

Does a backup battery mean the radio works without mains power?

Not necessarily. A backup cell may preserve only the clock. Ask the factory to demonstrate whether broadcast reception and speaker output work with the external supply disconnected.
