Sourcing emergency wind-up radios from China

Emergency wind-up radios from China carry 0% UK duty under the relevant portable-radio lines. Before sale in Great Britain, they must meet applicable radio-equipment requirements; confirm the safety, electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum-use requirements with the relevant authority. Check crank charging and UK reception on samples. Cambridge China Bridge sources emergency wind-up radios.

Duty on emergency wind-up radios

Heading 8527 covers radio-broadcast receivers, including receivers combined with sound recording, playback or a clock. Emergency wind-up radios capable of operating without external power fall within its portable-receiver branches. The table shows product variants sharing a commodity code, rather than separate tariff lines.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant portable-radio lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Zero customs duty does not remove product compliance obligations.

Confirm whether the model includes separate sound recording or playback functions before choosing between the listed codes. Give your broker the full specification and confirm the commodity code. For the wider heading, see jobsite radios.

Specify crank charging and usable reception

Specify the broadcast bands, tuning method, antenna, battery chemistry and capacity, charging inputs and supplied accessories. State whether the radio also has a torch, solar panel, alarm or phone-charging output. Test reception on UK broadcasts using the approved sample. Do not accept overseas weather-channel features as evidence of useful UK reception.

Agree a crank-charging test with a defined starting battery condition, turning method, listening volume and endpoint. Measure listening time after cranking separately from listening time after a full external charge. For solar charging, record the lighting conditions. Test any phone-charging claim with the intended devices and cables.

Broadcast receivers are covered by the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017; confirm the applicable safety, electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum requirements with the relevant authority. Check model-specific reports, the declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking and English instructions through testing and certification. The radios also fall within hazardous-substance restrictions. Electrical-equipment producers must register annually; battery registration depends on battery type and the amount placed on the market.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 emergency wind-up radios; illustrative order, FOB value and freight under 8527 19 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Crank and charging: check handle attachment, folding action, gear noise and charging from a depleted battery against the agreed sample procedure. Reject a charging indicator as the sole proof that energy reaches the battery.

Reception and sound: tune UK broadcasts on approval samples, then compare arrival samples under matching conditions. Check antenna joints, tuning controls, speaker distortion and reception while the torch is operating.

Battery and extras: inspect battery retention, charging ports and cables. Test the torch, alarm and any phone-charging output separately and together. Record unexpected heat, swelling, interruptions or rapid discharge.

Documents and finish: match model identification to reports and the declaration of conformity. Check UKCA or CE marking, the crossed-out bin symbol and English instructions. At inspection, also check sharp crank edges, loose screws, cracked housings and damaged packaging.

What goes wrong

A fully charged demonstration can hide ineffective crank charging. Check for slipping gears, loose handles and very short listening time after cranking. Small solar panels and phone-charging outputs can also disappoint when their advertised performance is tested under the buyer's actual conditions.

Reception may weaken when the torch or charging circuit is active. Batteries may lose charge during storage, and port covers may fit poorly. Compare samples with the agreed specification and require test evidence for any water-resistance claim before approving the wording on packaging.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on emergency wind-up radios from China?

The relevant portable-radio lines in heading 8527 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed. Confirm the code from the model's functions.

Do wind-up radios need CE or UKCA marking?

Yes. Broadcast receivers are radio equipment. For Great Britain, check the applicable UKCA or CE marking, declaration of conformity, model-specific compliance evidence and English instructions.

How do I check whether the hand crank works?

Start with the agreed depleted-battery condition, crank using the agreed method, then measure listening time at the agreed volume. A lit charging indicator alone does not establish useful charging.

Do battery and electrical recycling duties apply?

Yes. Radios bring electrical-equipment producer duties, including annual registration, and battery obligations. The battery registration route depends on battery type and the amount placed on the market.
