Sourcing Clock Radios from China

Clock radios from China carry 0% UK import duty across the relevant battery-operated and mains-powered lines, with no trade remedies shown. For sale in Great Britain, they must meet radio equipment requirements; WEEE duties also apply. Cambridge China Bridge sources clock radios.

Zero duty on clock radios

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the clock-radio lines shown carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Heading 8527 covers radio-broadcast receivers, including receivers combined with a clock. Code 8527 92 00 00 covers mains clock radios without sound recording or reproducing apparatus. Battery-operated versions and combinations with sound apparatus have separate lines. Tell your broker whether the receiver itself works without external power, rather than merely retaining the clock during a power cut.

Confirm the commodity code from the power arrangement and complete functions. A clock or smart speaker without a broadcast tuner should not be assumed to belong here. See radios and DAB receivers for the wider heading.

Specify reception, alarms and power-cut behaviour

Specify FM, DAB and DAB+ reception as applicable, station presets, alarm sound choices, snooze controls and display dimming. Define what happens when the selected station cannot be received. Agree whether the backup battery preserves only time and settings or also powers the alarm. State whether that battery is supplied, and approve the English menus and instructions.

Clock radios are radio equipment under the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017. For Great Britain, settle the CE or UKCA conformity route and obtain model-specific evidence for safety, electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum use. Hazardous-substance restrictions also apply to electrical and electronic equipment unless specifically excluded. Request evidence for the finished model, including its supplied adapter. All radios bring WEEE duties; producers must register annually.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 3,000 DAB clock radios under 8527 92 00 00, invoiced at £27,000 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £29,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,200, so it is £5,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Reception: scan the promised broadcast formats on samples in the UK. Compare reception with a reference radio at the same location, check presets and listen for distortion or cabinet rattle.

Alarm and backup: set the alarm, interrupt the mains supply and restore it. Check time, settings and alarm behaviour against the agreed specification, including the supplied backup battery and snooze controls.

Display and controls: check the dimmest setting in a dark room, viewing angle, button operation and legibility. Confirm that the English menus and instructions match the delivered functions.

Power and documents: at inspection, compare the adapter, plug, fuse and output rating with the approved sample. Check CE or UKCA marking, the WEEE symbol and the declaration of conformity against the exact model.

What goes wrong

A sample can receive stations in the factory yet perform poorly in UK reception conditions. A model advertised simply as digital may omit the promised DAB+ capability. Weak antennas, distorted speakers and loose cabinets should be checked before approving production.

A backup cell may preserve the clock without powering the alarm. Missing or flat cells can erase settings, while a display that looks acceptable in daylight can be too bright beside a bed. Record the approved power-cut behaviour and night display settings, then repeat those checks on arrival.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on clock radios from China?

The relevant mains and battery-operated clock-radio lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff data. No trade remedies, suspensions or attached import controls are shown. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Which commodity code applies to a clock radio?

8527 92 00 00 covers mains clock radios without sound recording or reproducing apparatus. Battery-operated versions and sound combinations use other lines. Confirm the complete functions and power arrangement with your broker.

Do clock radios need CE or UKCA marking?

For sale in Great Britain, clock radios fall under the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017. Use the applicable CE or UKCA conformity route, supported by safety, electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum evidence.

Will the alarm work during a power cut?

Do not assume so. Ask whether backup power runs the alarm or only preserves time and settings. Test the approved sample with the mains disconnected, then repeat the agreed check on delivered stock.
