Sourcing uncoated silver brazing wire from China

Uncoated silver brazing wire classified as semi-manufactured silver under heading 7106 carries 0% UK duty from China. For ordinary brazing applications, cadmium must be below 0,01 % by weight. Confirm the alloy and classification before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources uncoated silver brazing wire.

Duty and classification

Heading 7106 covers silver in powder, unwrought and semi-manufactured forms. For uncoated silver brazing wire, confirm whether the alloy belongs under the semi-manufactured line, 7106 92 00 00. The table shows supply forms under the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff classifications. For silver used in electroplating, see our silver electroplating anode sourcing guide. For sputtering applications, see our silver sputtering target sourcing guide. For silver supplied as mesh, see our silver mesh sourcing guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all supplied lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions listed. The semi-manufactured line has no attached controls. The powder line has import and export waste controls; if a shipment involves powder or waste, confirm the attached requirements with your customs broker.

Give your broker the complete alloy composition, physical form and confirmation that the wire is uncoated. Use finding your commodity code. For the related coated product, see flux-coated silver brazing rods.

Specify the alloy and wire form

Specify silver content and the other alloy constituents, cadmium content, wire diameter and tolerance, coil or spool format, net metal weight, surface condition and batch identification. State explicitly that the wire must have no flux coating or flux core. Agree the melting range and intended base metals with the supplier, then trial a sample using your intended joint and separately selected flux.

For ordinary brazing applications, HSE's published restriction text prohibits cadmium use in brazing fillers at concentrations equal to or greater than 0,01 % by weight. Specify cadmium-free material and request batch-specific analytical results with a reporting limit suitable for checking this threshold.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 200 kg of uncoated silver brazing wire, illustrative only under 7106 92 00 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £30,300. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £30,300, so it is £6,060. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Composition: match the batch certificate to the delivered wire and independently check silver content and cadmium on production samples.

Dimensions: measure diameter along sampled lengths and check straightness, winding and spool fit against the approved sample.

Surface and weight: check for oil, corrosion, coating, damaged wire and tangled coils; reconcile net metal weight with the packing list.

Joint trial: check feeding, melting and joint filling using the intended base metals and flux. Record results against the batch through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A substituted alloy can change melting behaviour and joint filling even when the wire looks identical. A generic certificate may describe the sample rather than the delivered batch. Mixed lots, incorrect spool dimensions, tangled winding and excessive surface contamination can also interrupt production.

Approve the composition and a working sample before ordering. Keep batch labels with the stock, retain a sample from each delivered lot and investigate failed joint trials before releasing the material for production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on silver brazing wire from China?

The supplied tariff data gives 0% duty for semi-manufactured silver under 7106 92 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures. Confirm that your wire's alloy belongs under this code.

Can I buy cadmium-containing silver brazing wire?

For ordinary brazing applications, cadmium use in fillers is prohibited at concentrations equal to or greater than 0,01 % by weight. Specify cadmium-free wire and check batch analysis.

Does uncoated silver brazing wire include flux?

Specify bare wire without a flux coating or core. Select any separate flux for the intended alloy, base metals and joining process, and trial them together.

What should I check when the wire arrives?

Check batch composition, cadmium results, diameter, net metal weight, surface cleanliness and winding. Trial a joint using the intended materials before releasing the batch.
