Sourcing uncoated gasket paper from China
Uncoated gasket paper from China classified under heading 4805 carries 0% UK duty across the relevant weight bands. Confirm with the relevant authority whether virgin wood-fibre paper requires timber due diligence when first placed on the Great Britain market. Confirm the composition and processing before choosing the code. Cambridge China Bridge sources uncoated gasket paper.

Duty and classification for gasket paper
Heading 4805 covers other uncoated paper and paperboard in rolls or sheets, with processing limited by the chapter note. The selected rows are possible classifications for uncoated gasket stock, rather than dedicated gasket-paper codes. Select by grammage and whether the paper is made from recovered paper. See our wider heading guide.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. Paper made from virgin wood pulp falls within the UK Timber Regulations, so the business first placing it on the Great Britain market must carry out due diligence on the fibre source.
Give your customs broker the fibre composition, grammage, sheet or reel format and details of any coating, impregnation or reinforcement. Ask them to review treated material and finished cut gaskets separately before using these rows. Confirm the commodity code before ordering; see UK import duty and VAT for the tax calculation.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other uncoated paper, weighing 150 g/m² or less | 4805 91 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Other uncoated paper, weighing over 150 but under 225 g/m² | 4805 92 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other uncoated paper from recovered paper, weighing 225 g/m² or more | 4805 93 20 00 | 0% | None |
| Other uncoated paper, weighing 225 g/m² or more, excluding recovered grades | 4805 93 80 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the paper against the sealing joint
Specify fibre composition, virgin or recovered content, grammage, thickness and tolerances, density, moisture, sheet dimensions or reel width, and machine direction. Ask the mill to identify every binder, filler and treatment. An uncoated description alone does not explain whether the material has been impregnated.
State the fluid, operating temperature, pressure, flange condition and clamping arrangement. Agree tests for compressibility, recovery, fluid absorption, dimensional change after immersion and leakage in a representative joint. Request results for the actual grade and batch rather than a general claim of oil resistance.
Importing or supplying new products with intentionally added asbestos is prohibited. Specify asbestos-free material and request supporting composition and test evidence. For virgin wood-fibre grades, collect pulp-source, species and harvest-country information for timber due diligence.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of palletised uncoated gasket paper sheets under 4805 93 80 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,800, so it is £3,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: measure thickness across the sheets or reel width, check grammage and compare dimensions with the approved specification.
Sealing performance: compare compression, recovery and immersion results with the agreed limits; trial cut samples and check leakage in the intended joint.
Condition: inspect for curl, delamination, brittle edges, inclusions, damp patches and damaged reel cores; check moisture protection on arrival.
Traceability: match batch labels to mill test reports, composition evidence and fibre-source records. Use our inspection guide to agree sampling.

What goes wrong
Paper can match the ordered thickness yet absorb the service fluid, swell or lose strength. Uneven thickness can leave leak paths, while poor recovery can reduce sealing after the joint relaxes. Accept a grade against the intended joint and fluid, rather than colour or thickness alone.
A sample described as uncoated paper may be replaced by treated stock or a different fibre blend. Ask the supplier to record the approved formulation and disclose changes. Damp packing can also cause curl and cutting problems; compare arrival samples with retained samples before releasing the batch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on uncoated gasket paper from China?
The relevant heading 4805 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record, read on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures. Confirm that the material fits the heading.
Is all paper sold as gasket paper covered by heading 4805?
Do not choose the code from the sales name alone. Give your broker the composition, grammage, format and processing details, particularly for impregnated, reinforced or finished cut material.
What should I test before buying gasket paper?
Check thickness uniformity, compressibility, recovery and behaviour in the intended fluid. Trial the material in a representative joint under the agreed service conditions.
Do timber rules apply to gasket paper?
For virgin wood-fibre paper, confirm with the relevant authority whether timber due diligence applies to the first business placing it on the Great Britain market. Also confirm whether bamboo-based or recovered products qualify for an exclusion.
