0% on the supplied umbrella-parts lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6603 covers parts, trimmings and accessories of umbrellas and walking sticks. All supplied lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions recorded. The other-parts line is 6603 90 90 00. The table shows purchasing variants against that same line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The tariff attaches CITES, seal-product and cat-and-dog-fur import controls to the other-parts line. CITES-listed species in the relevant annexes require permits; imports of cat and dog fur and products made from it are banned. For seal products, confirm the requirement with your customs broker before shipment from China. Give the broker the spring's material declaration and details of any attached components.

The supplied facts do not identify locking springs separately. Send drawings, material details and a sample description to your broker to confirm the commodity code before relying on the other-parts rate. Use the wider umbrella frames and parts guide for orders that include frames or other components.

Specify the catch and shaft interface

Identify whether the spring holds the runner open, retains it closed or locks a telescopic shaft. Provide a dimensioned drawing showing strip thickness or wire diameter, free shape, catch projection, fixing position and mating shaft slot. Specify material, heat treatment, coating and acceptable dimensional variation. Distinguish the locking catch from the spring that drives automatic opening.

Approve samples fitted to your actual shaft and runner. Agree engagement, holding and release checks, repeated operating cycles and corrosion checks against the intended use. Consumer products supplied in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Assess unintended release, exposed sharp edges and finger trapping in the assembled mechanism.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10,000 umbrella locking springs; illustrative order, classification to be confirmed under 6603 90 90 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,900, so it is £580. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: compare sampled springs with the approved drawing and assemble them into the intended shaft and runner; check catch projection and slot engagement.

Locking: check that the runner stays in the intended position under the agreed load and releases without sticking or excessive force.

Fatigue: repeat the agreed opening and closing sequence; check for permanent deformation, cracks, weakening and accidental release.

Finish: check cut edges for burrs, coatings for bare patches and surfaces for rust; keep different spring variants separately identified in the packing.

What goes wrong

A catch can look correct loose but miss the shaft slot after assembly. Incorrect forming or heat treatment can leave it too stiff to release or too weak to hold. Burrs scrape the runner, coating build-up changes the fit, and corrosion can make the spring stick.

Keep an approved assembled sample and agree acceptance checks before production. Compare arrival samples with that assembly and record failures by batch and spring variant. Include mechanism testing in your inspection brief, rather than checking loose dimensions alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on umbrella locking springs from China?

The supplied other-umbrella-parts line, 6603 90 90 00, carries 0% duty from China. Confirm that your actual locking spring belongs in that line before using the rate.

Will the same locking spring fit different umbrella shafts?

Do not assume interchangeability. Match the catch projection, fixing position, shaft slot and runner geometry, then test samples in the intended assembly.

How do I check whether the spring will weaken?

Agree repeated operating cycles with the factory and test the assembled mechanism. Compare holding and release behaviour before and after cycling, and inspect for cracks or permanent deformation.

Should I order locking springs or complete runner assemblies?

Order loose springs when you control assembly and can verify the fit. Consider assembled runners when the catch interface is difficult to reproduce, and approve them on your actual shaft.
