Sourcing Umbrella Ferrules from China
Umbrella ferrules from China carry 0% UK duty under the other umbrella-parts line, with no trade remedy recorded. Ferrules sold as consumer replacements must be safe. Specify the shaft fit, fixing method and end profile, then test assembled samples for loosening and sharp edges. Cambridge China Bridge sources umbrella ferrules.

UK duty on umbrella ferrules
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6603 covers parts, trimmings and accessories of umbrellas and walking sticks. Separate umbrella ferrules fall within the other-parts line, 6603 90 90 00, carrying 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The ferrule variants in the table share this line.
The tariff attaches CITES and seal-product import controls, plus a cat-and-dog-fur prohibition, to this line. Cat and dog fur products cannot be imported. CITES-listed materials need the appropriate permit checks. For seal-containing goods from China, the tariff attaches a control; confirm the applicable exception and documents with your customs broker before ordering. It also records corresponding CITES and cat-and-dog-fur export controls.
Confirm the commodity code using the ferrule drawing, material and intended umbrella use, especially if other components arrive with it. See the umbrella frames and parts guide for the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal umbrella shaft-end ferrules | 6603 90 90 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the ferrule and its shaft connection
Define the ferrule as the cap or sleeve at the umbrella shaft end. Send a section drawing showing the bore, insertion depth, outside profile and end shape. Specify material, wall thickness, coating, colour and whether attachment uses a thread, interference fit, adhesive or crimp. Agree dimensional tolerances and approve a sample fitted to your actual shaft.
Agree a retention test and check the assembled umbrella after repeated opening, closing and contact with the ground. Look for sharp edges, cracking and exposed shaft ends. UK businesses must not sell consumer products they know, or should have known, are unsafe; assess ferrules sold as consumer replacements on that basis.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 metal umbrella ferrules; FOB value and freight are hypothetical. under 6603 90 90 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £992 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,992. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,992, so it is £598.40. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: measure the bore and insertion depth against the drawing; assemble samples on production shafts and check alignment.
Retention: perform the agreed pull and twist checks after assembly; inspect threads, crimps and adhesive joints for movement.
Edges: check the end profile and rim for burrs, sharp points, cracks and any exposed shaft edge.
Finish and packing: compare coating and colour with the approved sample; inspect for rust, chips and crushed mouths. Record findings in the inspection report.

What goes wrong
A bore that is too large leaves the ferrule loose; a tight bore can split plastic or distort a thin metal sleeve. Coating inside the bore can change the fit, while a mismatched thread may appear secure until the umbrella is used. Approve the coated production sample on the intended shaft.
Burrs can remain around trimmed metal rims, plating can chip during fitting, and loose packing can dent sleeve mouths. Check fitted samples as well as loose parts, and keep styles separated so similar-looking ferrules are not mixed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on umbrella ferrules from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% under 6603 90 90 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded.
Are umbrella ferrules the same as rib tips?
This guide covers shaft-end caps or sleeves. Rib tips attach at the canopy edge. Use a drawing and an assembled sample to avoid ordering the wrong part.
How do I check that a ferrule will stay attached?
Fit it to the intended production shaft and perform the pull and twist checks agreed with the factory. Repeat checks after opening, closing and ground contact.
Can I approve ferrules from photographs?
Photographs show shape and colour but cannot establish bore fit or retention. Approve a physical sample assembled on your shaft before accepting production.
