Sourcing UHMWPE powder from China

UHMWPE powder of specific gravity 0.94 or more normally carries 6% UK duty from China, with no suspension or trade remedy recorded on the relevant line. Polymers are exempt from UK REACH registration, but monomers or additives may need registration. Cambridge China Bridge sources UHMWPE powder.

Duty on UHMWPE powder

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 3901 covers polymers of ethylene in primary forms. For UHMWPE powder of specific gravity 0.94 or more, check 3901 20 90 00, which carries 6% duty from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension on this line.

The tariff attaches an import waste control. Waste shipment controls apply only when the material is waste. For material from China whose waste status is uncertain, the importer should confirm the requirement with their customs broker before shipment; the tariff entry alone does not establish the procedure for that consignment.

The table repeats the relevant tariff line for different purchasing uses, rather than suggesting separate UHMWPE codes. Confirm composition and specific gravity through the commodity code guide. See polyethylene and EVA granules for the wider heading.

Specify molecular weight and powder behaviour

Specify the intended process: compression moulding, ram extrusion or porous sintering. Agree molecular weight or viscosity number with the test method, particle size distribution, bulk density, additives, colour and permitted contamination. State whether the powder must be virgin material and require disclosure of recycled or off-grade content.

Approve a sample in your own process. Compare consolidation, surface finish and machining behaviour for solid parts, or pore structure and flow performance for porous parts. Keep the approved sample and its batch analysis as the comparison for subsequent deliveries.

Confirm with HSE whether UK REACH registration is required for the polymer, monomers or additives, and whether any registration further up the supply chain covers your imports. For food contact applications, request a grade-specific declaration of compliance and the supporting migration testing, as described in the wider polyethylene guide.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: One tonne of UHMWPE powder for a processing trial; illustrative values under 3901 20 90 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,500. Duty at 6% is £270. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,770, so it is £954. Import taxes total £1,224; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £270 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check producer, grade and batch identifiers against the purchase order and certificate of analysis.

Powder: compare particle size distribution, bulk density and molecular weight evidence with the approved specification.

Cleanliness: inspect representative samples for foreign particles, colour variation and agglomerates.

Packing: check bag seals, liners, batch labels and pallet protection; isolate damaged bags on arrival.

What goes wrong

A supplier substitutes ordinary polyethylene or a different molecular weight grade while retaining the requested product name. Particle size changes can alter powder filling and consolidation; contamination or undeclared recycled material can affect appearance and consistency. Accept the grade through a processing trial, not solely through its trade name.

A matching certificate does not establish that the shipped bags contain the approved material. Link inspection samples to the shipment batches and retain comparison samples. Use the quality inspection guide to agree the inspection scope.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on UHMWPE powder from China?

For powder of specific gravity 0.94 or more under 3901 20 90 00, the supplied tariff record shows 6%, with no suspension or anti-dumping or countervailing measure.

Does UHMWPE powder need UK REACH registration?

Confirm with HSE whether registration is required for the polymer, monomers or additives, and whether any registration further up the supply chain covers your imports. Check the position for the actual grade.

What should I specify when buying UHMWPE powder?

Specify the process, molecular weight evidence and test method, particle size distribution, bulk density, additives and contamination limits. Approve a sample in your own process.

Does the tariff waste control apply to virgin powder?

Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. The tariff attaches a waste control; ask your customs broker to confirm the requirement if the consignment's status is uncertain.
