Trumpet import duty: 2%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, trumpets fall under brass-wind instruments, commodity code 9205 10 00 00, within heading 9205. Goods from China carry 2% duty. The supplied record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows trumpet variants sharing this code. For other instruments, see the brass and woodwind guide.

The tariff attaches ivory and CITES import controls to this line. Commercial imports containing ivory from species listed in the Ivory Act need an exemption. CITES-listed materials may require permits: confirm the applicable import documents and corresponding Chinese export documents with the Animal and Plant Health Agency and your customs broker before dispatch. The record also lists cultural-object, ivory and CITES export controls; check these if subsequently exporting an instrument.

Confirm the finished instrument's materials and intended use through finding your commodity code. Separately supplied mouthpieces and cases are classified separately, while toy instruments are classified as toys. The worked order is illustrative, rather than a supplier quotation.

Specify tuning, valves and trumpet finish

Agree the key, pitch, bore, bell dimensions, body material, valve material, spring action and tuning-slide fit. Specify lacquer or plating, mouthpiece fit, finger-button material, case support and spare parts. Keep an approved sample and require the factory to set up and play-test instruments before packing.

Confirm with Trading Standards the applicable consumer-product safety requirements, including whether the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 apply in Great Britain and which rules apply in Northern Ireland. Request supplier statements on restricted substances in mouthpieces, lacquer and plating. Establish whether the product is a lesson instrument or a toy intended for children to play with, and confirm the applicable safety rules with Trading Standards before arranging testing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 12 lacquered student trumpets (illustrative order) under 9205 10 00 00, invoiced at £3,600 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,500. Duty at 2% is £90. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,590, so it is £918. Import taxes total £1,008; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £90 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Playing: have a musician compare samples with the approved instrument using a tuner, checking response, intonation across the range and valve combinations.

Valves and slides: check valves return freely without sticking, valve caps thread smoothly, slides move without binding and joints do not leak.

Finish and mouthpiece: check lacquer or plating for bubbles, scratches and tarnish, and check the mouthpiece rim and receiver for rough edges and secure fit.

Arrival and packing: inspect bells and tubing for dents, check instruments cannot move inside their cases, and compare model labels and supplied accessories with the order.

What goes wrong

A trumpet can look acceptable yet play poorly. Sticky valves, leaking joints and uneven intonation become apparent during playing. Poorly fitting slides hinder tuning, while weak case supports allow the bell or valve assembly to take impacts during transport.

Record playing and mechanism checks against the approved sample before shipment, then repeat them on arrival. Photograph finish defects and transit damage before handling stock further. Use the quality inspection guide to agree what the inspector records.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on trumpets from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 2% for brass-wind instruments under 9205 10 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Can I import a trumpet with ivory finger buttons?

Do not order it without checking eligibility. Commercial imports containing ivory from listed species need an Ivory Act exemption, and CITES documents may also be required.

Are student trumpets classed as toys?

Assess the instrument's intended use rather than relying only on whether a child uses it. Ask Trading Standards to confirm whether it is a musical instrument or a toy and which safety rules apply.

How do I check trumpet quality before shipping?

Have a musician play-test samples for response and intonation. Check valve return, slide fit, leaks, mouthpiece fit, finish and case support against the approved sample.
