Accordion duty and material controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 November 2026, accordions and similar instruments under 9205 90 10 00 carried 2% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or tariff suspension was listed. Heading 9205 covers wind musical instruments; the table shows accordion variants sharing the same commodity line.

The tariff attaches ivory import controls and CITES import controls. Ivory items for sale need an eligible registration or exemption certificate, with the reference entered on the customs declaration. For CITES-listed materials from China, confirm the applicable permits with the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the Chinese management authority before shipment. The listed cultural-object licence is an export control; confirm its application before any later export.

This guide covers acoustic accordions. Confirm the construction and intended use through our commodity code guide, particularly for electronic or toy models. Parts and accessories are classified separately. See the wider wind instrument guide for other products within this heading.

Specify the keyboard, reeds and bellows

State piano or button keyboard, button layout, treble range, bass and chord layout, register switches, reed configuration and tuning character. Specify whether a note changes when the bellows direction reverses. Agree key travel, bass-button resistance, instrument weight, strap adjustment and the case.

Request the reed, valve, bellows, key-cover and strap materials in writing. For ordinary new stock, specify ivory-free key covers and decoration. Have an accordion player approve the sample for response, tuning and air consumption, then retain it as the inspection reference.

Confirm applicable consumer instrument safety requirements with Trading Standards for Great Britain and with the relevant authority for Northern Ireland. Agree checks for sharp edges, loose fittings and strap security alongside the musical checks.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial batch of student acoustic accordions under 9205 90 10 00, invoiced at £3,600 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,200. Duty at 2% is £84. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,284, so it is £856.80. Import taxes total £940.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £84 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Playing: test every treble note, bass button and register in both bellows directions; listen for silent reeds, buzzing, uneven response and tuning differences.

Bellows: inspect folds, corners and joints; check for leaks, rubbing and uneven resistance against the approved sample.

Action: check keys and bass buttons return freely, switches engage fully, and straps and brackets hold securely.

Arrival and packing: inspect for damp, corrosion, displaced reeds and crushed corners; check the instrument cannot move inside its case. Use our inspection guide.

What goes wrong

An accordion can look correct while leaking air or playing unevenly. Poor reed setting causes delayed notes; loose reed mounting can cause buzzing; sticking valves or buttons affect response. A tuning description alone does not establish whether the batch matches the approved sound.

Weak cases and loose packing can damage bellows corners or disturb the mechanism. Record defects on arrival and compare the affected instrument with the retained sample. Agree how the supplier will correct tuning, leaks and action faults before approving the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on accordions from China?

Accordions and similar instruments under 9205 90 10 00 carried 2% duty on 4 November 2026. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or tariff suspension was listed.

Can I import accordions with ivory keys?

Do not assume they are eligible. Listed-species ivory needs an exemption for commercial dealing, and the customs declaration needs its registration or certificate reference. Specify ivory-free materials for new stock.

How do I check accordion quality before shipment?

Have an accordion player compare samples with the approved instrument. Test notes in both bellows directions, bass action, registers, tuning and leaks, then inspect the case and packing.

Are student accordions classed as toys?

For student instruments used in music lessons, ask Trading Standards to confirm whether the intended design and use bring them within toy safety rules. For instruments intended for children to play with, confirm whether the Toys (Safety) Regulations apply.
