Duty on terrestrial television aerials

Heading 8529 covers parts suitable solely or principally for the apparatus of headings 8524 to 8528. For terrestrial television reception, the relevant lines distinguish outdoor aerials, indoor aerials and telescopic or whip aerials for portable apparatus. Separately supplied aerial filters and separators have their own line.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The file records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. Conditional suspensions elsewhere in the heading concern specified apparatus parts under 8529 90 93 00 and 8529 90 96 00; they do not change the selected aerial rates.

Confirm the commodity code against the aerial's construction, intended receiver and indoor or outdoor use. Describe separately supplied filters and accessories separately. For the related satellite product family within the same heading, see satellite dish antennas.

Reception band, mounting and powered models

Specify the reception band, polarisation, measured gain across the band, connector, cable length and mounting arrangement. Distinguish passive aerial gain from amplifier gain. For outdoor models, agree element material, corrosion protection, mast clamp fit and connector sealing. Ask for sample reception comparisons using the same receiver, cable and aerial position.

Consumer products supplied in Great Britain must be safe. Ask for a safety review covering sharp elements, insecure clamps, cable strain and the supplied power arrangement. Agree installation instructions and product identification before approving packaging.

For amplified models and supplied power units, check the scope of the electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous substance rules with your testing adviser. Equipment within the hazardous substance rules needs a declaration of conformity. Also check electrical equipment producer status: producers must register annually. Assess the actual supplied assembly rather than relying on a report for a different amplifier.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 outdoor terrestrial television aerials, illustrative order under 8529 10 30 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Reception: compare bulk samples with the approved aerial using a controlled setup; check measured gain across the specified band and look for amplifier overload or unstable reception.

Connections: check connector fit, cable continuity, screening and strain relief; confirm the supplied cable and any power injector match the approved sample.

Outdoor assembly: assemble the elements and mast clamp; inspect bent sections, loose fasteners and corrosion protection, then check connector sealing with an agreed spray test.

Packing and documents: check element protection, accessory contents, product identification and installation instructions against the approved artwork. Include assembly and reception checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A supplier may quote amplifier gain as though it were the aerial's reception gain. A sample can perform well near a transmitter while the same design disappoints at the intended installation. Compare aerials under the same conditions and agree how performance will be measured before ordering.

Outdoor failures include water entering the cable connection, clamps slipping and elements bending in transit. Indoor models can arrive with poorly screened cables or a substituted amplifier. Record the approved construction and power arrangement, and compare bulk samples before accepting a substitution.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on terrestrial TV antennas from China?

The selected aerial and filter lines carried 0% duty on 1 October 2026. The tariff file records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on them.

Which code covers outdoor television aerials?

8529 10 30 00 covers outside aerials for radio or television broadcast receivers. Confirm classification against the actual product and separately supplied accessories.

Is an amplified TV aerial always better?

Compare reception under the intended conditions. Ask for passive aerial gain and amplifier gain separately, and check for overload with strong signals.

What should I check on outdoor aerial samples?

Check reception across the specified band, connector sealing, clamp fit, corrosion protection, cable strain relief and whether the packed elements arrive straight.
