Sourcing ADS-B antennas from China

ADS-B antennas within heading 8529 carry 0% UK duty from China across the selected lines, with no listed trade remedies. Distinguish a standalone antenna from a receiver kit, and check the supplied product's compliance before sale. Cambridge China Bridge sources ADS-B antennas.

Zero duty on the selected antenna lines

Heading 8529 covers parts suitable for use solely or principally with apparatus of headings 8524 to 8528. For standalone ADS-B antennas, check the other-aerials line, 8529 10 69 00. The table also covers potentially relevant portable whips, separate filters and antenna parts; it does not classify every ADS-B product under the same code.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Other parts lines in this heading have narrowly described suspensions; these are not blanket relief for ADS-B equipment. Import VAT is separate from duty.

Confirm the commodity code using the construction, intended apparatus and contents of each shipment, especially where a receiver or powered electronics are included. For wider heading context, see the GNSS receiver antenna guide.

Specify the antenna and receiver connection

Define whether the order is a passive antenna, an antenna with amplification, or a receiver kit. Specify the receive band, impedance, polarisation, measured gain, radiation pattern and mounting orientation. Agree connector drawings showing the centre contact and thread, cable type and length, and whether mounting hardware and weather seals are included. Describe ground-based reception separately from aircraft installation.

Agree sample tests for the antenna alone and with the supplied cable. Request measured gain and standing-wave ratio plots across the agreed band, rather than a headline gain figure. Check reception with the intended receiver and installation position. For outdoor units, agree checks for water entry, cable strain relief and mounting security.

Assess the product actually supplied before sale. Under the radio equipment rules, separately sold components can themselves be fully manufactured products. Where the supplied product is radio equipment within scope, the importer must ensure conformity with essential requirements and that the manufacturer has completed the relevant conformity assessment.

The hazardous substance guidance distinguishes business-to-business component sales from final assemblies: those component sales are outside its scope, but a final assembly placed on the market must comply, including its components. Confirm the supply model and request material evidence for the intended assembly.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative wholesale order of 10,000 passive ADS-B antennas; values are illustrative under 8529 10 69 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £31,800, so it is £6,360. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Performance: compare sampled antennas with the approved gain and standing-wave ratio plots across the ordered band, and repeat the agreed receiver comparison.

Connection: check centre contacts, threads, cable construction and length against the drawings; test continuity and look for damaged crimps or loose connectors.

Outdoor construction: check seals, cable exits, mounting hardware and strain relief; carry out the agreed water-entry test.

Batch identity: match model and batch references to the approved sample and test records; check packing protects the antenna elements and connectors during inspection.

What goes wrong

An antenna can look correct while its performance peak falls outside the ordered band. A gain claim without matching test conditions, excessive cable loss or a different mounting arrangement can undermine reception. Keep the receiver, cable route and mounting position consistent when comparing samples.

Connector threads may fit while centre contacts do not mate correctly. Outdoor failures often start at an unsealed connector or unsupported cable exit. Keep the approved construction and packing specification with the purchase order, and require approval before the factory changes either.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ADS-B antennas from China?

The selected heading 8529 antenna and related parts lines carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff reading, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Which commodity code covers a standalone ADS-B antenna?

Check 8529 10 69 00 for other aerials. Confirm against the antenna's construction and intended apparatus; a receiver kit or separately supplied filter needs its own classification check.

What should I ask an ADS-B antenna factory to test?

Ask for measured gain and standing-wave ratio across the ordered band, cable checks and a reception comparison using your intended receiver. Agree outdoor sealing and mounting tests.

Are antenna parts automatically exempt from radio equipment rules?

Do not assume that. Official guidance says separately sold components can be fully manufactured products. Assess the supplied product and confirm which requirements apply before sale.
