Sourcing tantalum rods from China
Tantalum rods from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant tariff lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. Classification distinguishes rods obtained simply by sintering from other rods. Waste controls depend on whether the material is waste. Cambridge China Bridge sources tantalum rods.

Duty and classification for tantalum rods
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8103 covers tantalum and its articles, including waste and scrap. Rods obtained simply by sintering fall under 8103 20 00 00; other bars and rods are listed under 8103 99 10 00. The table separates bars and rods within these shared tariff lines.
Both rod lines show 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. The snapshot attaches import and export waste controls to both. Environment Agency guidance for England says waste shipment controls apply only when the material is waste. For a shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the attached control and any applicable waste procedure before dispatch.
Give your broker the manufacturing route, composition, dimensions and intended use to confirm the commodity code. For related forms within this heading, see tantalum tubes.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tantalum rods obtained simply by sintering | 8103 20 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Tantalum rods other than those obtained simply by sintering | 8103 99 10 00 | 0% | None |
Specify chemistry, processing and machining allowance
State whether you need unalloyed tantalum or an alloy, and agree the chemistry limits rather than accepting a description of pure tantalum. Specify the manufacturing route, annealed or worked condition, diameter, length, straightness, surface finish and machining allowance. Request a material certificate identifying the heat, test results and the rods supplied.
Agree independent chemistry testing and any mechanical tests needed for your application. Review the UK REACH position before importing or selling: registration covers substances on their own and in mixtures, but substances in articles are subject to registration only in limited cases. Ask your adviser to assess the actual rod form and use.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 2 kg of wrought tantalum rods; illustrative order, FOB value and freight under 8103 99 10 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,800, so it is £560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match bundle markings and heat references to the material certificate; check sampled chemistry against the agreed tantalum or alloy specification.
Dimensions: measure diameter along each sampled rod, check ovality, length and straightness, and confirm that the machining allowance remains available.
Condition: inspect for cracks, seams, scoring, damaged ends and embedded contamination; compare surface finish and material condition with the approved sample.
Packing and records: check that rods cannot rub or bend in transit, reconcile net weight and piece count, and retain inspection results against the heat references. Agree the scope of inspection before dispatch.

What goes wrong
A rod can match the quoted diameter yet leave too little usable material after surface defects are removed. Bent rods, inconsistent diameters and damaged ends can also disrupt machining. Put acceptance criteria on the purchase order and inspect against them before approving shipment.
A certificate without a matching heat reference does not establish which rods were tested. Another avoidable dispute is ordering worked rod while the invoice describes only sintered material. Keep the processing description consistent across the order, certificate and customs paperwork, and clarify the status of any reclaimed material.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on tantalum rods from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% for both sintered rods and other bars and rods, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed.
Which commodity code covers tantalum rods?
8103 20 00 00 covers rods obtained simply by sintering. 8103 99 10 00 lists other bars and rods. Give your broker the manufacturing route to confirm the classification.
What should a tantalum rod certificate show?
Ask for the material designation, heat reference, chemistry results, material condition and agreed mechanical test results. Match the heat reference to the rods delivered.
Do new tantalum rods need waste import consent?
Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. The tariff attaches waste controls to both rod lines, so ask your broker to confirm their application to your shipment from China.
