Sourcing tantalum sheet from China

Tantalum sheet from China carries 0% UK duty under 8103 99 10 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. Waste shipment controls apply when the material is waste, so establish its status before shipping. Agree chemistry, thickness, flatness and heat traceability. Cambridge China Bridge sources tantalum sheet.

Tantalum sheet duty and waste controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8103 covers tantalum and its articles, including waste and scrap. Tantalum sheet falls within 8103 99 10 00 alongside plate, strip and foil. Goods from China carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. The table shows related forms sharing this commodity line.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Environment Agency guidance for England says waste shipment controls apply only when the material is waste. For imports subject to notification controls, the Chinese exporter must apply to the competent authority in the dispatch country for consent. For discarded sheet or scrap, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable controls before shipping.

Confirm the commodity code against the material and its condition, especially when buying offcuts or fabricated components. See the tantalum foil guide for related material within the heading, and UK import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify chemistry, rolling condition and flatness

State whether you want unalloyed tantalum or an alloy, then agree the composition, thickness, width, length and tolerances. Specify rolled or annealed condition, surface finish, edge condition and rolling direction where forming matters. Ask for a heat-linked mill certificate covering chemistry and the mechanical properties needed for your process.

UK REACH generally applies to substances on their own, in mixtures or in articles. Establish the position for the sheet and its intended use before importing into Great Britain. Agree independent chemistry testing and a forming or welding trial where these decide acceptance, using testing and certification support if needed.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 200 kg of tantalum sheet; illustrative order, FOB value and freight under 8103 99 10 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £60,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £60,800, so it is £12,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and traceability: match bundle labels, heat references and certificates; compare sampled chemistry with the ordered composition.

Dimensions: measure thickness across the sheet and near its edges; check width, length and flatness against the purchase drawing.

Surface and edges: inspect both faces for scratches, embedded particles, rolling marks and dents; check cut edges for burrs and cracks.

Packing and weight: check net weight, sheet count, interleaving, edge protection and support against bending. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A certificate can describe a different heat from the delivered sheet. Uneven thickness, bowed sheets, scored surfaces or burred edges can leave material unsuitable for forming or welding. A composition check alone does not establish that the rolling condition and mechanical properties match the order.

Agree acceptance criteria before production and retain a labelled sample. Use clean separators and rigid support in packing, and inspect before removing protective layers in bulk. Keep usable sheet and discarded scrap separate so the shipment description reflects what you are buying.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on tantalum sheet from China?

The supplied tariff reading lists 0% duty under 8103 99 10 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

What should a tantalum sheet mill certificate show?

Ask for a heat reference linked to the delivered material, chemistry, rolling or annealing condition, and the mechanical properties agreed for your process.

How do I check tantalum sheet before accepting it?

Check thickness across each sampled sheet, flatness, surface damage, cut edges and heat references. Arrange independent chemistry testing and a process trial where needed.

Do waste controls apply to new tantalum sheet?

Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. The tariff attaches waste controls to this line; ask your broker to confirm the position for offcuts or discarded sheet.
