Sourcing tallow stearin from China

Tallow stearin falls within heading 1503's stearin lines, which carry 0% UK duty for goods from China. Ask APHA and your customs broker whether ordinary food-grade tallow fractions from China can enter Great Britain; industrial material needs a separate eligibility check before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources tallow stearin.

Tallow stearin duty and import eligibility

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 1503 covers lard stearin, lard oil, oleostearin, oleo-oil and tallow oil, not emulsified, mixed or otherwise prepared. The stearin lines distinguish industrial uses from other uses. All supplied lines carry 0% duty for China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions recorded.

The tariff attaches veterinary control and waste import and export controls to every supplied line. The other-use lines also carry organic import control. Ask your customs broker to confirm how these controls apply to your Chinese consignment, including veterinary entry documents and any waste shipment procedure. Confirm consignment inspection-certificate requirements with the relevant organic control body, and ask APHA and your customs broker separately about food import eligibility.

Ask APHA and your customs broker whether ordinary food-grade tallow fractions from China can be imported into Great Britain under the applicable animal-origin food restrictions. Industrial eligibility needs separate confirmation. Use the commodity code guide with the species, fractionation process and intended use. The oil rows are comparisons, not descriptions of solid tallow stearin. For the wider heading and liquid fraction, see tallow olein.

Specify the solid fraction and melting behaviour

Describe tallow stearin as the solid fraction required, identifying the animal species and source. Record rendering, fractionation and refining steps, and whether anything has been mixed in or further prepared. State the intended industrial process rather than accepting a specification that says only ‘animal fat’.

Agree melting behaviour, acid value, peroxide value, moisture, insoluble impurities, colour and odour against a retained sample. Ask the factory to explain its sampling and test methods. Specify sealed packing and storage conditions that protect the batch from moisture, oxidation and contamination.

Before ordering industrial material, ask APHA and your broker to confirm Chinese-origin eligibility, the processing route and veterinary documents. Ask APHA to confirm establishment approval requirements for industrial rendered fats exported to Great Britain. The applicable rendered-fat route requires an appropriate model-based health certificate. Use factory verification to check the producer and its records.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative only: 20 tonnes of industrial tallow stearin, conditional on confirmed classification and import eligibility under 1503 00 11 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £34,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £34,000, so it is £6,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the animal species, solid fraction, intended use and batch identity across the order, analysis and shipping documents.

Performance: compare melting behaviour with the retained sample and your process needs; check acid value, peroxide value, moisture and insoluble impurities.

Packing: inspect seals, leaks, sediment, odour and evidence of water or contamination from previously used containers on arrival.

Records: match the delivered batch to its analysis, production records and confirmed import route. Arrange quality inspection against the agreed acceptance criteria.

What goes wrong

A supplier substitutes a softer oil fraction, supplies material with unsuitable melting behaviour or provides a generic analysis unrelated to the shipment. Other rejection points include rancid odour, excess moisture, sediment and contaminated packing. Compare each batch with the agreed specification before shipment.

Zero duty is mistaken for import permission, or an industrial description is accepted without checking eligibility. Resolve the route before paying for production. If material is waste entering England under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the competent authority in the country of dispatch for consent. Confirm the exact waste procedure with your broker and environmental authority.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on tallow stearin from China?

The supplied stearin lines under heading 1503 carry 0% duty for China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. Zero duty does not establish import eligibility.

Can I import food-grade tallow stearin from China?

An organic claim or supplier food-grade certificate does not establish eligibility.

Can I buy Chinese tallow stearin for industrial use?

Ask APHA and your customs broker to confirm eligibility for the exact species, processing route, establishment and intended use before ordering. Do not assume that an industrial description makes the shipment admissible.

What should I check in a tallow stearin batch?

Check melting behaviour, acid value, peroxide value, moisture and insoluble impurities against the agreed specification. Compare colour and odour with the retained sample, and match the analysis to the delivered batch.
