Zero duty, with import eligibility checked separately

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 1503 covers lard stearin, lard oil, oleostearin, oleo-oil and tallow oil, not emulsified, mixed or otherwise prepared. For tallow olein, distinguish industrial tallow oil excluding human food manufacture from other uses. The table includes stearin comparison lines to help distinguish solid fractions from the liquid fraction being ordered. See the wider animal fat fractions guide.

The supplied record shows 0% duty across the listed Chinese-origin lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. Veterinary and waste import and export controls are attached throughout; other-use lines also have organic import control. Confirm with APHA and your customs broker whether ordinary food-grade tallow fractions from China can be imported into Great Britain. Do not treat an organic inspection certificate as confirmation of import eligibility.

For industrial purchases, ask APHA and your customs broker to confirm Chinese-origin eligibility, species, processing route and veterinary documents before ordering. Confirm how the attached veterinary control applies. For waste, confirm the shipment requirements with your broker and environmental authority; where notification controls apply to imports into England, the process starts in the dispatch country. Confirm the commodity code using composition and intended use.

Specify the liquid fraction and its behaviour

Describe the product as tallow olein and record the animal species, raw-material origin, fractionation process and intended industrial use. Ask whether refining, mixing, emulsification or other preparation takes place. Do not accept a specification that says only animal oil. Separate the liquid fraction required for your process from a supplier's stearin or whole-tallow offer.

Agree melting behaviour, acid value, peroxide value, moisture, insoluble impurities, colour and odour against a retained sample. Specify storage and unloading conditions and sealed containers suitable for the material. For industrial rendered fats, production must be at an establishment approved to export to Great Britain. Use factory verification to check the producer's identity and records.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative only: 20 tonnes of industrial tallow olein, conditional on confirmed import eligibility under 1503 00 30 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £34,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £34,000, so it is £6,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match species, fraction, intended use and batch identity across the order, analysis report and shipping documents.

Behaviour: compare melting behaviour and the liquid fraction with the retained sample under the agreed handling conditions.

Condition: sample for acid value, peroxide value, moisture and insoluble impurities; investigate rancid odour, sediment or unexpected colour.

Packing: check seals, leaks, contamination and storage records on arrival. Match the delivered batch to its analysis. Use quality inspection to define the checks.

What goes wrong

A supplier's food-grade description is mistaken for permission to import, or industrial use is treated as automatic eligibility. Resolve the import route before committing to production. The illustrative order remains conditional on that check; it does not establish that a Chinese consignment is admissible.

A batch can meet a generic animal-fat specification but behave differently in the buyer's process. Too much solid material, excess moisture, sediment, oxidation or contamination from reused containers can cause rejection. Agree acceptance criteria, retain samples and inspect the actual shipment rather than relying on a generic supplier report.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on tallow olein from China?

The relevant heading 1503 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. Import eligibility must be checked separately.

Can I import food-grade tallow olein from China?

Ask APHA and your customs broker to confirm whether ordinary food-grade tallow fractions from China can be imported into Great Britain under the applicable animal-origin food rules. A food-grade or organic description does not establish import eligibility.

Can I order Chinese tallow olein for industrial use?

Confirm eligibility with APHA and your customs broker before ordering. Provide the species, processing route, producer and intended use. Industrial labelling alone does not establish an admissible import route.

What should I check in a tallow olein batch?

Check melting behaviour, acid value, peroxide value, moisture, insoluble impurities, colour and odour against the agreed sample. Match the batch analysis to the delivered goods and inspect container cleanliness.
