Zero duty for qualifying synthetic beeswax

Heading 3404 covers artificial and prepared waxes. Synthetic beeswax qualifying as an other artificial or prepared wax falls under 3404 90 00 00. The table shows different uses sharing this tariff line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Natural beeswax belongs to heading 1521; the supplier's product name alone cannot establish the classification.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant line carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Obtain the formulation and ingredient identities, then confirm the commodity code with your customs broker before shipment. See the artificial and prepared waxes guide for the wider heading.

Specify composition and melting behaviour

Define whether you want a wholly synthetic beeswax substitute or a blend containing natural beeswax. Ask for ingredient identities and proportions, intended application, colour, odour, melting behaviour, hardness and supplied form. Agree the test methods and acceptance criteria with the factory, and retain an approved sample.

For cosmetic formulations, trial the wax in your actual oils and manufacturing process. Compare texture, cooling behaviour, separation and odour after storage. For candle or polish use, test the complete formulation rather than accepting a raw-wax sample on appearance alone.

For sale in Great Britain, classification and labelling must be assessed by someone with scientific competence. Confirm the applicable chemical labelling and packaging requirements for hazardous grades with HSE; hazardous chemicals supplied for workplace use need a safety data sheet. Assess UK REACH registration for the component substances against your annual import volumes. These chemical checks also apply when the tariff snapshot lists no attached import control.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a pallet of synthetic beeswax pastilles for a small cosmetics manufacturer under 3404 90 00 00, invoiced at £4,500 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,700. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,700, so it is £1,340. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check the batch certificate, ingredient information and any safety data sheet against the approved formulation; investigate substitutions.

Physical properties: compare melting behaviour, hardness, colour and odour with the retained sample using the agreed methods.

Application: trial a batch sample in your formulation and check texture, separation and consistency after cooling and storage.

Packaging: check seals, batch identification, net contents, contamination and caking; keep an arrival sample for later comparison.

What goes wrong

A substitute can resemble natural beeswax while behaving differently in the buyer's formulation. Changes in composition or hardness can alter texture, spreading or cooling behaviour. Yellowing, unexpected odour and batch variation can make an otherwise usable wax unsuitable for the intended product.

A sample approval loses value if the factory changes the blend without agreement. Put formulation changes and batch acceptance criteria in the purchase specification. Arrange testing and certification support where ingredient or hazard information needs assessment.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on synthetic beeswax from China?

Synthetic beeswax qualifying under 3404 90 00 00 carried 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the formulation supports that code.

Is synthetic beeswax classified like natural beeswax?

Natural beeswax belongs to heading 1521. A synthetic substitute qualifying as an artificial or prepared wax belongs to heading 3404. Confirm the composition before choosing the code.

Does synthetic beeswax need a safety data sheet?

A hazardous chemical supplied for use at work needs a safety data sheet. Ask the supplier for ingredient and hazard information so the assessment matches the actual grade.

Can synthetic beeswax replace natural beeswax in my formula?

Do not assume a direct replacement. Trial the proposed grade in your formulation and compare hardness, melting behaviour, texture, odour and separation with the approved product.
