Sourcing swap-body freight containers from China
Swap-body freight containers from China under 8609 00 90 00 carry 0% UK duty, with no additional trade remedy recorded. Confirm the safety approval position for the design and transport route, and check gas controls for insulated or refrigerated bodies. Cambridge China Bridge sources swap-body freight containers.

Zero duty on swap-body freight containers
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8609 covers containers specially designed and equipped for carriage by one or more modes of transport. Swap-body freight containers within the other-containers line carry 0% duty from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure or suspension is recorded. The table shows product variants sharing the same tariff line. See the wider shipping containers guide.
The tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances and an import control for fluorinated greenhouse gases. Ozone-depleting substances must not be used in new equipment, except recycled halons for critical uses. For refrigerated bodies, confirm whether quota authorisations or delegations are needed: pre-charged equipment cannot be imported without sufficient authorisations where these apply. Products containing banned fluorinated gases must not be placed on the Great Britain market. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable declarations.
The tariff also lists a DCMS Export Licence control. Ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance if the bodies will subsequently be exported. Confirm the commodity code using drawings, transport functions and installed equipment. Containers imported to remain in the UK attract import VAT; the standard rate is 20%. See UK import duty and VAT for the calculation.

Specify chassis fit and demounting arrangements
Define the body type, intended cargo, payload, floor loading and laden support-leg rating. Supply drawings of the carrying chassis, locating guides, locking positions and demounting height. Specify support-leg adjustment, footplates, retaining pins and stowed clearance. Agree whether handling uses grappler pockets, forklift pockets or another documented method, and whether the body is designed for stacking or lifting from above.
Agree the delivery route from China before manufacture. Ask a container approval organisation to confirm the safety approval position for the actual design and sea-carriage arrangement. Where CSC approval applies, request the approval certificate and matching safety plate. Specify door openings, curtain closures, roof sealing, floor material and corrosion protection. For insulated or refrigerated bodies, obtain the insulation blowing-agent and refrigerant details for the import-control review.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Ten used dry swap-body freight containers, illustrative only under 8609 00 90 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £6,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £38,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £38,000, so it is £7,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Chassis interface: measure locking positions, locating guides and underside clearance against the agreed drawings; trial the body on the intended chassis.
Support legs: check welds, adjustment, retaining pins and footplates; witness the agreed demounting and support test, and check that stowed legs remain secured.
Body and floor: inspect distortion, corrosion, floor joints and door alignment; test doors, curtains and seals, and check for water entry after the agreed spray test.
Records and arrival: match body identifiers to drawings, test reports and any applicable approval documents; compare arrival condition with dispatch photographs before putting the body into service.

What goes wrong
A body can match the advertised external dimensions yet miss the chassis locking positions or demounting height. Legs may bind, retaining pins may not seat, and footplates may be unsuitable for the intended yard surface. Door frames can distort during handling, while damaged curtain edges and roof seams let water reach the cargo.
Make interface measurements and a witnessed demounting trial part of factory acceptance. Record permissible handling methods so a non-stackable body is not booked into a stacking operation. For freight containers covered by the safety rules, maintenance in efficient working order and good repair is required. Arrange factory verification around the factory's welding, dimensional checks and testing capability.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on swap bodies from China?
Under 8609 00 90 00, duty is 0% in the supplied tariff reading. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded. Import VAT applies to containers imported to remain in the UK.
Do swap-body containers need a CSC plate?
Ask an approval organisation to confirm the position for the design and sea-carriage arrangement. Where CSC applies, obtain the approval certificate and matching safety plate before booking transport.
Will a Chinese swap body fit my existing chassis?
Agree locking positions, locating guides, demounting height and underside clearance from chassis drawings. Require an interface check and a trial on the intended chassis.
What should I check on refrigerated swap bodies?
Obtain refrigerant and insulation blowing-agent details. Ask your broker to check ozone-depleting-substance and fluorinated-gas controls, applicable quota arrangements and product bans before shipment.
