Sourcing specialist sulphur from China

Sublimed, precipitated and colloidal sulphur from China all carry 4% UK duty under heading 2802. Before supplying it in Great Britain, the importer must ensure correct chemical classification, labelling and packaging. Waste shipments need separate checks. Cambridge China Bridge sources specialist sulphur.

Duty on specialist sulphur

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 November 2026, heading 2802 covers sulphur, sublimed or precipitated, and colloidal sulphur. Its sole commodity line, 2802 00 00 00, carries 4% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For a shipment from China to England under notification controls, the exporter must seek consent from the competent authority in China. Confirm the applicable procedure with your customs broker before shipment, including any onward export.

Give your broker the production method, composition and intended use to confirm the commodity code. Do not select this heading merely because the product is described as sulphur powder. See UK import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify the sulphur form and test method

Specify sublimed, precipitated or colloidal sulphur explicitly. Agree sulphur assay, particle size distribution, moisture, ash, acidity and relevant impurity limits, together with sampling and test methods. For colloidal material, establish whether the quotation covers dry sulphur or a dispersion, and identify any carrier and additives.

Ask for a batch certificate of analysis and a safety data sheet before approving the sample. For supply in Great Britain, importers must ensure classification, labelling and packaging comply with the chemical classification rules. Establish your UK REACH position before ordering rather than relying on a supplier's general assurance.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 25 tonnes of precipitated sulphur in bags under 2802 00 00 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,000. Duty at 4% is £680. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,680, so it is £3,536. Import taxes total £4,216; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £680 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the production method, product form and batch identification to the order and certificate.

Analysis: independently check assay, moisture, ash and agreed impurities using the contract test methods.

Particle size: check the agreed distribution and inspect for agglomeration; assess dispersion behaviour where relevant.

Packing: check seals, leakage, contamination, net weight and labels against the agreed documentation. Arrange quality inspection before loading.

What goes wrong

Buying against the description sulphur powder leaves the production method and particle size unresolved. A sample can match the intended process while the delivered batch differs in fineness, moisture or impurities. For colloidal material, an unspecified carrier or solids basis can also make certificates difficult to compare.

Agree acceptance criteria before shipment and retain a sample from the inspected batch. Keep the product's waste status separate from its commercial grade: the tariff's waste measures are a reason to check the shipment's status, rather than assume every sulphur order follows a waste procedure.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on specialist sulphur from China?

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 November 2026, sublimed, precipitated and colloidal sulphur under 2802 00 00 00 carry 4% duty, with no recorded trade remedy or suspension.

Is every sulphur powder covered by heading 2802?

The heading covers sublimed, precipitated and colloidal sulphur. Ask your broker to confirm classification from the manufacturing process and composition rather than the powder description alone.

Do waste controls apply to new sulphur?

Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. The tariff attaches waste measures, so confirm the shipment's status and any applicable procedure with your broker.

What should I ask a sulphur factory to test?

Agree assay, particle size, moisture, ash, acidity and impurities relevant to your process. Require batch results with named test methods and compare an independent sample with the contract.
