Colloidal sulphur duty and waste controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 2802 covers sublimed, precipitated and colloidal sulphur. Colloidal sulphur shares the single commodity line 2802 00 00 00 with the other forms. See the wider sulphur guide.

Goods from China carry 4% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Confirm their application with your customs broker. For imports of waste into England under notification controls, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved.

Give your broker the composition, manufacturing process, physical form and intended use. Confirm the commodity code, particularly where the supplier offers a formulated preparation rather than colloidal sulphur itself.

Specify sulphur content and dispersion

Specify sulphur content, moisture, particle size distribution and the method used to measure it. Name the impurities to be tested, including ash and metals relevant to your process. Ask whether the material contains wetting agents, stabilisers or a liquid carrier, and obtain the full composition rather than relying on the description ‘colloidal’.

Agree a dispersion test using your intended liquid and mixing conditions. Record wetting, agglomeration, sediment formation and ease of redispersion against an approved sample. Request a batch certificate of analysis and safety data sheet.

Before supplying the chemical in Great Britain, ensure it is correctly labelled and packaged. If this is a substance you have not previously imported, consider whether UK REACH registration is required. Settle the registration position before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial consignment of colloidal sulphur under 2802 00 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,000. Duty at 4% is £160. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,160, so it is £832. Import taxes total £992; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £160 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the batch certificate, composition and lot markings to the purchase specification.

Assay: independently test representative samples for sulphur content, moisture and agreed impurities.

Dispersion: repeat the agreed wetting and redispersion test; record lumps and sediment against the approved sample.

Packing: check seals, leakage, net weight and label consistency with the safety data sheet. Arrange quality inspection against the agreed checks.

What goes wrong

A fine yellow powder may match the appearance of the approved sample but behave differently in your process. Excess moisture, agglomeration or an undisclosed wetting agent can alter dispersion. A sulphur assay alone does not demonstrate that the material will wet and redisperse as agreed.

Keep a retained sample from each inspected batch and compare arrival samples using the same method. Record packing damage and batch discrepancies before releasing stock. Resolve chemical supply documentation and any waste-control questions before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on colloidal sulphur from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 4% under 2802 00 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed.

Does colloidal sulphur need UK REACH registration?

If you have not previously imported the substance, consider whether registration is required. Confirm the position for the actual substance before ordering.

Do waste controls apply to my sulphur order?

The tariff attaches waste controls. Confirm applicability with your broker. Notified waste imports into England need consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities before shipment.

How do I check colloidal sulphur quality?

Check sulphur content, moisture, particle size and agreed impurities. Test wetting, sediment and redispersion in your intended liquid against an approved sample.
