Sourcing stretchable printed circuits from China

Stretchable printed circuits classified under heading 8534 carry 0% UK duty from China across all listed lines. For circuits incorporated into electrical equipment, the finished product must meet the restricted substances rules. Specify extension and resistance limits together. Cambridge China Bridge sources stretchable printed circuits.

UK duty and classification

Heading 8534 covers printed circuits. For stretchable circuits, distinguish multilayer constructions consisting only of conductors and contacts, other constructions with those elements, and circuits with other passive elements. The table separates single-sided and double-sided examples within the same tariff line.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines.

Send the construction drawing and details of any mounted components to your customs broker to confirm the commodity code. Component assemblies need separate classification checks. For the wider product family, see flexible printed circuits.

Specify extension and electrical performance together

Define the substrate material, conductor material, track geometry, encapsulation, contact finish and reinforced connector areas. State whether extension comes from the substrate, conductor geometry or both. Provide the circuit layout and identify areas that must remain fixed during stretching.

Agree the extension direction, working extension, repeated stretch sequence and recovery period. Set acceptance limits for resistance while extended and after recovery, alongside continuity and insulation checks. Use samples mounted in the intended fixture; a loose strip test can miss strain concentrated around connectors.

For circuits incorporated into electrical equipment sold in the UK, obtain material declarations for conductors, substrate, adhesives and encapsulation to support the finished product's restricted substances compliance. The manufacturer must determine whether its products comply with those rules; supplier assurances alone do not settle that assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 single-sided stretchable printed interconnects under 8534 00 19 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Construction: compare the substrate, conductor pattern, encapsulation and contact reinforcement with the approved drawing and sample. Check track edges, adhesion and exposed contact areas under magnification.

Electrical performance: review continuity and short-circuit test records for every circuit. On samples, measure resistance at rest, during the agreed extension and after recovery using consistent contact positions.

Stretch endurance: repeat the agreed stretch sequence in the intended mounting arrangement. Check for conductor cracking, delamination, permanent deformation and intermittent connections at reinforced areas.

Batch records: match material declarations and test reports to the supplied construction and revision. Check batch identification and packaging for creases, sticking surfaces or damage to exposed contacts.

What goes wrong

A circuit can conduct at rest but become intermittent when stretched. Weak points include narrow conductor sections, transitions into reinforced contact areas and poorly bonded encapsulation. Resistance may also remain elevated after recovery. A flat electrical test does not establish performance under extension.

A supplier may offer a bendable flexible circuit without demonstrating extension. Require the agreed stretch test on production samples and written approval before changing substrate, ink or adhesive. If the failure appears only in the finished assembly, reproduce its mounting and connector restraint before accepting a replacement batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stretchable printed circuits from China?

All lines in the supplied heading 8534 record carry 0% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties. Confirm the code for the actual construction.

Are stretchable printed circuits the same as flexible circuits?

Specify the difference in the order: bending performance does not demonstrate extension performance. Require resistance and continuity measurements during stretching and after recovery.

What should I send a Chinese stretchable circuit factory?

Send the circuit layout, material specifications, contact design, mounting arrangement, extension direction and agreed acceptance limits for resistance, recovery and repeated stretching.

What compliance documents should I request?

Request material declarations for the substrate, conductors, adhesives and encapsulation, matched to the supplied revision, to support restricted substances compliance of the finished electrical product.
