UK duty on standalone multitrack recorders

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8519 covers sound recording or sound reproducing apparatus. The relevant supplied line is 8519 81 00 90 for other apparatus using magnetic, optical or semiconductor media. The table shows product variants sharing that tariff line, rather than separate commodity classifications.

The supplied tariff snapshot gives 0% duty for goods from China on this line. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the commodity code using the recording function, storage medium and full specification, particularly for equipment combining mixing and recording. For the wider heading, see digital voice recorders.

Specify simultaneous recording, not playback tracks

Specify how many inputs can record simultaneously, how many tracks can play back, and whether each input produces a separate editable file. State microphone and line inputs, phantom power, gain range, supported recording formats, storage compatibility and file-export method. Require recording and playback without a connected computer.

Approve a sample using your microphones and storage media. Agree acceptable preamplifier noise, clipping behaviour, headphone monitoring, overdubbing and project recovery after interrupted power. Record the approved firmware version and supplied accessories.

For Great Britain, check electromagnetic compatibility and obtain evidence of compliance with the hazardous-substance restrictions. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the recorder and relevant mains adaptors fall within the electrical safety rules, and which technical documentation, declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking requirements apply.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 standalone multitrack audio recorders; FOB and freight values are illustrative under 8519 81 00 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Recording: record through every input simultaneously using the agreed format, then export and play each separate track. Check missing channels, dropouts, clipping and timing alignment.

Monitoring: test headphone and line outputs, gain controls, phantom power, overdubbing and playback while recording. Listen for hiss, hum and unwanted channel bleed.

Storage and power: test approved media, saving, reopening projects and recovery after interrupted power. Check battery operation where supplied and adaptor compatibility.

Documents and build: match model identification, firmware and supplied adaptor to the approved sample and supporting reports. Check connectors, controls, display, accessories and legible operating instructions.

What goes wrong

A quoted track count may describe playback rather than simultaneous recording. A device may export only a mixed recording, or need a computer to perform a function advertised as standalone. Write acceptance tests into the specification and repeat them on bulk samples using the approved storage media.

Reports for a different model or adaptor leave the delivered configuration unverified. If wireless functionality is included, check the Radio Equipment Regulations rather than assuming the wired model's assessment covers it. Include electrical equipment producer registration in the UK sales plan; producers must register annually.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on standalone multitrack recorders from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot gives 0% duty under 8519 81 00 90, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures. Confirm the code for your model.

Does the advertised track count mean simultaneous recording?

Ask separately for simultaneous input recording and playback track counts. Test that every required input records to a separate file without a connected computer.

What compliance documents should I ask the factory for?

Ask for the declaration of conformity and supporting reports covering the exact recorder and supplied adaptor. Check electromagnetic compatibility, hazardous-substance compliance and applicable electrical safety.

How do I test a standalone multitrack recorder before shipment?

Record all agreed inputs together, export each track, test monitoring and overdubbing, then save and reopen the project. Repeat with approved storage media and check interrupted-power recovery.
