Record-deck duty and classification

Heading 8519 covers sound recording or sound reproducing apparatus. Its specific turntable line is 8519 30 00 00, described as turntables or record-decks. The table shows product variants sharing that line, rather than separate tariff classifications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the supplied record-deck line carries 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control is recorded against it. Import VAT is separate; see UK import duty and VAT.

Give your customs broker the complete specification, including built-in speakers, recording functions and wireless features, to confirm the commodity code. For the wider sound-apparatus heading, see professional rackmount CD players.

Specify the drive, cartridge and audio output

Specify belt or direct drive, supported record speeds, speed stability, platter material, tonearm adjustment, cartridge model and replacement stylus availability. State whether operation is manual or automatic and whether the output needs a separate phono stage. Approve a sample using the amplifier and speakers your customers are expected to use.

For Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority the electrical safety documentation, declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking requirements applicable to the mains-voltage equipment. Equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance falls within electromagnetic compatibility rules, subject to exceptions. Electrical equipment also needs hazardous-substance compliance. Wireless models fall within radio equipment rules. Ask for evidence covering the exact deck and supplied power adaptor through testing and certification.

Check your producer status for waste electrical equipment before sale. Electrical and electronic equipment producers must register annually. Mains-voltage equipment must also be accompanied by clear, legible instructions in easily understandable English.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 100 record-decks; FOB value and freight are illustrative, not a quotation under 8519 30 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Playback: check speed stability, pitch drift, background hum and channel balance with a reference record. Try each advertised playback speed and output mode against the approved sample.

Tonearm: check free movement, cartridge alignment, tracking adjustment and cueing action. For automatic decks, check start, return and stopping without the stylus scraping the record.

Build and documents: compare the cartridge, stylus, motor, belt, power adaptor and labels with the approved specification and model-specific reports. Check the dust cover hinges, platter seating and supplied instructions.

Arrival condition: check for a bent stylus, loose counterweight, displaced platter, cracked cover and damaged connectors. Confirm that the tonearm and moving parts were secured for transport. Use quality inspection to set the acceptance checks.

What goes wrong

A cartridge substitution or poorly fitted belt can change tracking and pitch even when the cabinet looks identical to the sample. Hum may appear only when the deck is connected to an amplifier. Test the agreed output arrangement and require approval before the factory changes components.

Packaging that protects the cabinet can still leave the stylus, tonearm or platter exposed to movement. Agree how these parts are restrained or packed separately, and check playback after unpacking. A power-adaptor report alone does not demonstrate the performance of the complete deck.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on record turntables from China?

The supplied tariff data gives 0% duty for record-decks under 8519 30 00 00, with no listed trade remedy, suspension or import control. Import VAT is separate.

Do I need a built-in phono preamplifier?

Specify the intended connection. A phono output needs a suitable phono stage; a line output can connect to a suitable line input. Test the sample with your intended amplifier.

Is CE marking accepted for a mains-powered turntable in Great Britain?

Confirm with the relevant authority whether CE or UKCA marking can be used for the equipment under the applicable electrical safety requirements. Check the declaration, technical documentation and exact model rather than accepting a logo alone.

How should record turntables be packed for shipping?

Agree restraints for the tonearm and protection for the stylus. Secure or separately pack loose moving parts, protect the dust cover and check playback after unpacking.
