Duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, heading 8519 covers sound recording or sound reproducing apparatus. The supplied lines all carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls recorded.

For ordinary rackmount CD players using optical media, the relevant supplied line is 8519 81 00 90. The table shows product variants within that same line, rather than separate tariff categories. The payment-operated laser-reading line is for payment-operated apparatus; laser reading alone does not make an ordinary rackmount player belong there.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete specification, particularly for combination equipment. See the wider audio player guide for the rest of the heading and the import duty and VAT guide for import tax calculations.

Specify rack fit, disc support and outputs

Specify chassis height, depth, mounting-hole positions, rack ears and clearance for connectors and ventilation. State tray or slot loading, supported pressed and recordable discs, file formats, cue behaviour, repeat modes and playback after a power interruption. Identify balanced or unbalanced outputs, digital outputs and the remote-control interface needed by the installation.

For mains-powered models, obtain electrical safety evidence for the exact product. Importers must check electromagnetic compatibility before sale in Great Britain. Request the corresponding conformity documents, matching model identification and hazardous-substance compliance documentation. Confirm any applicable WEEE obligations with the relevant authority. Use testing and certification to review the evidence against the supplied model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,000 professional rackmount CD players under 8519 81 00 90, invoiced at £45,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £47,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £47,500, so it is £9,500. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Rack fit: fit a production sample into the intended rack, checking ears, screw alignment, rear clearance and access to the loading mechanism.

Playback: use the agreed disc set, select tracks near the beginning and end, test cue and repeat functions, and check loading, ejecting and recovery after power interruption.

Audio and controls: listen through the intended sound system for hum, clicks and dropouts; check every output, channel, display, button and remote command.

Documents and packing: match the product to its reports and declaration, check the supplied mains lead and English instructions, and inspect protection around rack ears and the disc mechanism. Record results at inspection.

What goes wrong

A sample may play pressed discs but reject the recordable discs used by the venue. Loading mechanisms can jam, cue behaviour can differ from the agreed sample, and outputs can introduce hum when connected to the installed system. Test with the buyer's actual discs and equipment before accepting the production specification.

Rack ears can arrive bent, while chassis depth or rear connectors can prevent installation. A factory can also substitute a disc mechanism or power supply after sample approval. Record the approved components and require approval before substitutions; repeat functional checks on production samples.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
