Sourcing stainless electrode wire from China
Bare stainless steel welding electrode core wire from China pays 0% UK duty across heading 7223. Confirm that the shipment is uncoated stainless wire and classify it by composition; finished coated electrodes belong under a different heading. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel welding electrode core wire.

UK duty on bare stainless electrode core wire
Heading 7223 covers stainless steel wire, including bare wire bought for making welding electrode cores. Finished coated welding electrodes fall under heading 8311. The table shows composition-based alternatives, not interchangeable welding grades. Confirm the supplied chemistry and product form before using a commodity code. See the wider stainless steel wire guide.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure or suspension. It attaches both import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste; for a shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm whether the attached import control requires any action.
Ask your customs broker to confirm whether heading 7223 will fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism from 1 January 2027. Ask the mill for emissions information when planning future imports. The illustrative order values are not a quotation; see UK import duty and VAT for the calculation method.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bare stainless core wire: nickel 2.5% or more, other compositions | 7223 00 19 00 | 0% | None |
| Bare stainless core wire: nickel below 2.5%, other compositions | 7223 00 99 00 | 0% | None |
| Bare stainless wire: nickel 28% to 31%, chromium 20% to 22% | 7223 00 11 00 | 0% | None |
| Bare stainless wire: nickel below 2.5%, chromium 13% to 25%, aluminium 3.5% to 6% | 7223 00 91 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the core wire for electrode manufacture
State that you need bare solid stainless steel wire for subsequent cutting and coating. Specify alloy chemistry, diameter and tolerance, ovality, delivery condition, tensile strength, surface cleanliness and coil arrangement. Agree requirements for straightening and cutting on your equipment, rather than accepting a generic stainless wire description.
Request a heat-linked mill certificate giving composition and mechanical results. Agree sample trials through straightening, cutting and coating before approving production. UK REACH generally covers substances on their own, in mixtures or in articles; ask your compliance adviser to assess the supplied wire's status before sale.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of bare stainless steel welding electrode core wire under 7223 00 19 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £1,100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £33,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,100, so it is £6,620. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Chemistry: compare independent sample results with the ordered alloy and the mill certificate; match every coil tag to its heat.
Dimensions: measure diameter and ovality along samples, then check straightening and cut consistency against your agreed specification.
Surface: check for drawing lubricant, rust spots, scratches and contamination; trial the agreed cleaning and coating process.
Packing: check coil winding, tangles, moisture protection and readable heat labels before releasing stock. Use the inspection guide to define the inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A generic stainless wire order can arrive with the wrong chemistry or delivery condition. Diameter variation, residual lubricant and poor straightening can disrupt cutting or coating. Mixed heats make complaints harder to investigate. Keep an approved sample and link inspection results to the coil labels.
Core-wire chemistry alone does not prove the performance of the finished coated electrode. Trial the finished electrode in the intended application. Employers must control the health risks from welding fume, including during welding trials.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on stainless electrode core wire from China?
Bare stainless wire under heading 7223 carries 0% duty across all supplied lines. The tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no steel measure.
Is electrode core wire the same as a coated welding electrode?
Core wire is the bare material used to make the electrode. Finished coated welding electrodes fall under heading 8311. Confirm what the supplier will actually ship before choosing the code.
What should I ask a Chinese core-wire factory to supply?
Ask for agreed chemistry, diameter tolerance, delivery condition, surface cleanliness and coil details, plus heat-linked certificates and samples for straightening, cutting and coating trials.
Does the tariff waste control apply to new core wire?
Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. The tariff attaches a waste-control entry, so ask your broker to confirm the requirement for your shipment from China.
