Sourcing stainless steel TIG wire from China

Stainless steel TIG welding wire from China classified under heading 7223 pays 0% UK duty across the supplied lines. Confirm the code from composition and supply form, and specify filler chemistry for the intended weld rather than buying by base-metal grade alone. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel TIG welding wire.

UK duty on stainless steel TIG welding wire

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7223 covers wire of stainless steel. This guide concerns bare stainless TIG filler wire. Give your broker the composition, manufacturing description and supply form, including whether it is coiled or supplied as straight lengths. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. The table shows chemistry branches, not interchangeable welding fillers; the chromium-aluminium branch is not a general substitute. See the wider stainless steel wire guide.

All supplied lines show 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure or suspension. The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. For goods from China treated as waste under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the competent authority in the dispatch country for consent. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste procedure before shipment.

Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether and when these lines fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism. Ask the factory about emissions records and review the carbon border adjustment guide. Zero customs duty does not remove import VAT; see UK import duty and VAT.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify the filler for the weld

State the filler designation and agreed composition, base metals being joined, service conditions and intended welding procedure. Specify diameter and tolerance, surface cleanliness, coil or spool format, winding condition and packaging. For straight lengths, also agree length and straightness. Ask for batch chemistry linked to the heat number, and approve a trial weld with your own process before accepting production.

For structural welding, confirm the applicable construction-product route with your compliance adviser and request the corresponding performance documents and marking evidence. Legitimately CE-marked construction products can continue to be supplied in Great Britain. Review your UK REACH obligations: its general scope includes substances on their own, in mixtures and in articles. Agree what composition and safe-use information the supplier will provide.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative stock order: 10 tonnes of stainless steel TIG welding wire under 7223 00 19 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £1,100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £33,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,100, so it is £6,620. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match filler designation, batch and heat numbers on packaging to the chemistry report; independently test composition where substitution would affect the weld.

Dimensions and handling: measure diameter and ovality; check spool fit, winding and unwinding, or straightness and cut ends for straight lengths.

Surface and packing: inspect for oil, moisture, rust spots and drawing residue; check sealed packaging and separation between filler grades.

Weld trial: use the intended base metal, shielding gas and procedure; check handling, fusion, porosity and the acceptance criteria agreed with your welding specialist.

What goes wrong

A supplier treats a stainless base-metal grade as a complete filler specification, mixes batches or supplies a chemistry report that does not match the wire. Dirty surfaces, damp packing and tangled winding can disrupt welding. A visual check cannot establish the composition or suitability of the filler.

Resolve these risks through an approved specification, traceable batch reports and a representative welding trial. Keep suspect batches separate until their identity and performance are checked. Set these checks out in the inspection brief.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stainless TIG wire from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% on every heading 7223 line, with no listed trade-remedy duty or steel measure. Confirm that your filler and supply form belong under this heading.

Can I order TIG filler using only the stainless steel grade?

Specify the filler designation and chemistry separately. Give the factory the base metals, service conditions and welding procedure, then approve a representative weld trial.

Are straight TIG filler lengths classified like coiled wire?

Ask your broker to check the actual supply form and manufacturing description. Do not assume that a code agreed for coiled wire also covers straight filler lengths.

Does stainless TIG wire need CE marking?

For structural welding, check the construction-product route and supporting performance documents. Legitimately CE-marked construction products remain accepted in Great Britain; confirm applicability to your filler.
