Sourcing stainless steel ice tongs from China
Ice tongs from China carry UK duty of 4% to 8% across the relevant plated and stainless steel lines; ordinary unplated stainless steel tongs carry 8%. As food contact utensils, they must not transfer constituents to food in quantities that could endanger health. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel ice tongs.

Duty on individual tongs and assorted sets
Heading 8215 covers sugar tongs and similar kitchen or tableware. Individual unplated stainless steel ice tongs are candidates for 8215 99 10 00. Assorted utensil sets have separate lines; packing identical tongs together does not itself describe an assorted set. See the sugar-tongs guide for related products within the heading.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 October 2026, unplated stainless steel articles and the relevant stainless steel assorted sets carry 8% duty from China. Individual precious-metal-plated articles carry 4%. The supplied records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or steel measure. The assorted-set lines attach ivory import and CITES controls; confirm their requirements with your customs broker before importing a set containing animal-derived parts.
Confirm the commodity code against the material, plating and complete contents of the shipment. Distinguish precious-metal plating from a coloured surface finish. Ask the broker to review photographs and the packing list rather than classifying solely from the supplier's description.

Specify the jaws, spring and steel
Specify steel grade, strip thickness, overall length, jaw opening, tip shape and finish. Choose serrated or cupped tips using samples tested with the ice shapes your customer serves. Agree the closing effort, return action and whether the design uses a separate spring, hinge or bent strip.
Ice tongs touch food, so they need to be safe and suitable for their intended use; confirm the applicable requirements concerning transfer of constituents to food with the relevant authority. Ask for food contact evidence and laboratory assessment of metal release under representative use conditions. Include coatings and any non-metal parts in the assessment. Define cleaning instructions and test any dishwasher claim on production samples.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10,000 stainless steel ice tongs under 8215 99 10 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,400. Duty at 8% is £272. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,672, so it is £734.40. Import taxes total £1,006.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £272 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: compare the material certificate with the ordered grade and arrange sample chemical analysis. Check thickness and weight against the approved specification.
Grip and return: lift wet ice with production samples, check that the jaws meet evenly, and repeat squeezing and release to identify sticking, twisting or loss of return action.
Finish and cleaning: check serrations, edges and hinge areas for burrs, polishing residue and dirt traps. Compare the finish with the approved sample and inspect after the agreed cleaning test.
Arrival and packing: during inspection, check bent arms, scratches, rust spots and protection between pieces. Match carton contents and product variants to the packing list.

What goes wrong
Misaligned jaws let wet ice slip even when the tongs look acceptable in a photograph. Excessive closing effort makes repeated use tiring; weak return action leaves the jaws partly closed. Agree a sample grip test and compare production pieces with the approved sample.
Grade substitution, rough serrations and retained polishing compound can escape a visual check of the outer surfaces. Thin arms may twist, while poorly protected packing lets tips scratch adjacent pieces. Check material evidence, inner surfaces and working action before accepting the batch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on stainless steel ice tongs from China?
Ordinary unplated stainless steel ice tongs carry 8% under 8215 99 10 00. Individual precious-metal-plated articles carry 4% under 8215 91 00 00. Confirm the code for assorted sets.
What food contact evidence should I request for ice tongs?
Ask for evidence covering the finished tongs, including metal-release assessment under representative use conditions. Have coatings and non-metal parts assessed separately where relevant.
How do I check whether ice tongs grip properly?
Test production samples with wet ice in the shapes you intend to serve. Check jaw alignment, slipping, closing effort and return action against the approved sample.
Can I check the stainless steel grade with a magnet?
A magnet is not a reliable grade check. Compare the ordered grade with the material certificate and have a production sample chemically analysed.
