Duty on cake servers and serving sets
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 October 2026, heading 8215 covers cake servers alongside spoons, forks and similar kitchen or tableware. Ordinary individual stainless steel cake servers and the stainless steel assorted sets shown here carry 8% duty from China. Individual servers plated with precious metal carry 4%. The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions.
The assorted-set lines attach an ivory import control and an import CITES control. Confirm the requirements for the actual materials with your customs broker before shipping from China. For any ivory component, check eligibility for an exemption before proceeding. Specify handle and decorative materials explicitly rather than accepting an unspecified natural material.
Confirm the commodity code using the material, plating and contents of any set. A carton of identical servers is different from an assorted serving set. If a gift set includes a cutting knife, review its classification separately. The wider cutlery guide explains the heading beyond cake servers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual stainless steel cake servers, without precious-metal plating | 8215 99 10 00 | 8% | None |
| Individual cake servers plated with precious metal | 8215 91 00 00 | 4% | None |
| Assorted stainless steel serving sets including a cake server, without precious plating | 8215 20 10 00 | 8% | None |
| Assorted stainless steel sets including a cake server and a precious-metal-plated item | 8215 10 30 00 | 8% | None |
Specify the serving blade and handle
Specify the steel grade, blade thickness, overall dimensions, serving-face width, neck angle and weight. State whether the server only lifts cake or also has a serrated cutting edge. Approve a sample with the intended cakes and plates: the blade should slide underneath a slice, support it and release it without an awkward wrist position.
Record mirror or satin finish, logo position, plating or coating, and whether the handle is integral, welded or attached. Agree checks for handle movement, bending and cleaning. Cake servers contact food, so confirm applicable food-contact safety requirements with the relevant food safety authority. Ask for metal migration evidence representing intended use, with coatings and plastic components assessed separately.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order, not a quotation: 10,000 stainless steel cake servers under 8215 99 10 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,400. Duty at 8% is £272. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,672, so it is £734.40. Import taxes total £1,006.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £272 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: compare certificates with the agreed steel grade and have a bulk sample analysed; a magnet alone does not establish the grade.
Blade and neck: measure against the approved drawing, check flatness and edge burrs, and repeat the agreed lifting and bending checks.
Handle and finish: check joint movement, gaps that retain cake residue, polish consistency and logo placement; test bulk samples against any agreed dishwasher claim.
Packing: check protection between serving faces, handle scuffing, gift-box fit and set contents. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong
Grade substitution can leave a server looking acceptable when new but developing rust spots after washing. Thin necks bend during use, while poorly finished edges snag cake or scratch hands. Compare material analysis, weight and the approved sample rather than judging appearance alone.
A loose attached handle or uneven serving face may only become obvious when lifting a slice. Test finished bulk samples with the intended use and cleaning method. Keep scratched plating, failed joints and mismatched gift-set contents out of accepted stock until the supplier resolves them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on stainless steel cake servers from China?
Ordinary individual stainless steel cake servers carry 8% duty. Individual precious-metal-plated servers carry 4%. The listed stainless steel assorted sets carry 8%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown.
What food contact evidence should I ask for?
Ask for metal migration testing representing intended food contact and cleaning, linked to the actual steel and finished design. Assess coatings and plastic components separately.
Can I check stainless steel grade with a magnet?
A magnet is not a reliable grade check. Compare the material certificate with the specification and have a sample analysed.
Does a cake server and knife gift set use the same code?
Do not assume it does. Knives with cutting blades fall under heading 8211. Ask your customs broker to confirm classification using the complete set contents.
