UK duty on stainless steel frying pans

Heading 7323 covers iron and steel table, kitchen and other household articles and their parts, alongside steel wool and scourers. Stainless steel frying pans are candidates for 7323 93 00 90. The table shows pan variants sharing that commodity line, rather than separate tariff classifications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 December 2026, the supplied record shows 0% duty for goods from China under this line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure or suspension recorded. It attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For discarded pans or scrap from China, confirm the applicable requirement with your customs broker before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the finished pan's materials, construction and heating method, especially for composite bodies or coated designs. For the aluminium alternative and wider cookware comparison, see aluminium frying pans.

Specify the cooking surface, base and handle

Specify the stainless steel grade for the food-contact surface and outer body separately. Agree rim diameter, usable cooking area, depth, wall thickness, weight and finish. Describe whether heat-spreading layers extend through the body or are confined to an attached base. Identify any coating and agree whether exposed layer edges are acceptable.

Obtain food contact documentation and material identification covering the finished pan, including any coating. Match reports to the supplied model and intended cooking conditions. Consumer pans supplied in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Specify handle attachment, grip clearance and claimed hob, oven and dishwasher suitability; approve samples under those intended conditions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 900 stainless steel frying pans; illustrative whole-pound FOB and freight values under 7323 93 00 90, invoiced at £7,500 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £8,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,400, so it is £1,680. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Materials and finish: compare material records, dimensions and weight with the approved sample; inspect the cooking surface, rim, rivets and welds for burrs, pits, cracks and polishing residue.

Base and heating: check rocking on the intended hob; heat and cool samples under agreed cooking conditions, then inspect for distortion or separation. Test induction heating where claimed.

Handle and balance: check attachment security and balance with a representative cooking load. Assess grip temperature and clearance during the agreed heating tests.

Packing and arrival: inspect protection between nested pans and around handles. Check delivered stock for dents, scratches, bent handles and base distortion. Agree the sampling brief through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Similar-looking pans can have different cooking surfaces, thinner heat-spreading layers or a changed base attachment. A pan may rock after heating, heat unevenly or fail to work on the claimed induction hob. Rivets can loosen, welds can crack and handles can become uncomfortable during cooking.

Keep the approved sample and written acceptance criteria for materials, construction and functional checks. Investigate rust spots, persistent residue, coating damage or base separation before releasing stock. Repeat the agreed heating and handle checks on production samples and on arrival; a report for another pan does not establish the supplied model's performance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stainless steel frying pans from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% under 7323 93 00 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm the finished pan's classification.

What food contact documents should I request?

Ask for material identification and food contact documentation covering the finished pan, including any coating. Match reports to the supplied model and intended cooking conditions.

How do I check induction compatibility?

Specify it in writing and test production samples on the intended induction hob. Check heating and stability, then inspect the base after cooling. A magnetic surface alone does not establish cooking performance.

Why does the tariff list waste controls for frying pans?

The commodity line carries waste controls, but waste shipment controls apply only to waste. For discarded pans or scrap from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirement before shipment.
