Sourcing catering skimmers from China
Stainless steel catering skimmers from China normally carry 8% UK duty; precious-metal-plated individual skimmers carry 4%. Food contact utensils must not release constituents into food at levels that could endanger health. Specify drainage holes, steel grade and handle joints. Duty on skimmers and assorted utensil sets
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 October 2026, heading 8215 covers skimmers alongside spoons, forks, ladles and similar kitchen or tableware. Ordinary individual stainless steel skimmers fall within 8215 99 10 00 at 8% duty for goods from China. Individual precious-metal-plated skimmers carry 4%. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure or suspension.
The assorted-set lines distinguish sets containing precious-metal-plated articles from other sets. The tariff attaches ivory import controls and CITES import and export control headings to these set lines; individual skimmer lines list an export CITES control heading. Listed-species ivory offered for sale requires registration or an exemption application. For any animal-derived component, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable border documents before shipping.
Confirm material, plating and whether the shipment comprises individual articles or assorted sets using finding your commodity code. Buying identical skimmers together does not describe an assorted utensil set. See the catering ladles guide for related articles within the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual stainless steel catering skimmers, without precious-metal plating | 8215 99 10 00 | 8% | None |
| Assorted stainless steel utensil sets including skimmers, without precious-metal plating | 8215 20 10 00 | 8% | None |
| Assorted stainless steel sets including skimmers and a precious-metal-plated article | 8215 10 30 00 | 8% | None |
| Individual catering skimmers plated with precious metal | 8215 91 00 00 | 4% | None |
Specify the skimmer head and handle
State whether the head is perforated sheet or wire mesh, its diameter and depth, hole or mesh opening, steel thickness, handle length and hanging-loop shape. Match drainage to the food being lifted: openings that retain small pieces may also retain residue. Agree a sample using the intended food and cleaning method.
Specify the steel grade for the head, handle and joining parts separately, plus the finish and weld locations. Confirm the applicable food contact safety requirements with the relevant authority. Ask for food contact evidence covering the finished skimmer, including coatings or plastic handles, and tests representing its intended use.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of stainless steel catering skimmers, not a quotation under 8215 99 10 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,400. Duty at 8% is £272. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,672, so it is £734.40. Import taxes total £1,006.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £272 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: compare certificates with the agreed grades and arrange sample chemical analysis where needed; a magnet alone does not establish the grade.
Head and drainage: check diameter, depth and openings against the drawing; inspect perforations, mesh ends and rims for burrs, distortion and trapped polishing residue.
Handle and joints: check alignment, grip and hanging loop; lift the agreed test load and check for bending, loose rivets, cracked welds or rotation.
Cleaning and packing: clean bulk samples using the agreed method, checking joints for retained residue and surfaces for rust; inspect carton protection for bent handles and dented heads. Use quality inspection to record defects against the approved sample.

What goes wrong
A polished sample can hide thin material or weak handle welds. In use, the head bends or the joint opens when lifting wet food. Rough perforations snag cleaning cloths, while folded rims and unfinished welds retain residue. Compare bulk samples with the approved construction and test the handle joint before accepting the shipment.
Grade substitution can show up as spotting or pitting after washing. Mixed materials at the handle joint also deserve inspection. Treat a generic report for a spoon as insufficient purchasing evidence for a skimmer with different welds, coatings or handles; ask the supplier to identify exactly which finished construction was tested.
