Sourcing sports energy gels from China

The selected recipe-dependent lines for sports energy gels carry 8% to 12% UK duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm food safety and allergen declaration requirements with the relevant food authority for gels sold as food; animal-origin ingredients need an import-route check. Recipe-dependent duty: 8% to 12%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 2106 covers food preparations not elsewhere specified or included. The selected composition-dependent lines carry 8% or 12% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. They are classification candidates, not dedicated energy-gel codes. Listed suspensions concern specified powders, coconut milk or other named preparations; they do not give an ordinary finished gel an automatic exemption.

The selected lines attach veterinary and organic import controls. For a gel confirmed as a medium-risk composite product containing milk, a composite product health certificate is required. Before ordering from China, ask the broker to confirm ingredient eligibility, notification and border checks for the exact recipe. Organic imports need a Great Britain certificate of inspection, issued by the exporter’s control body.

The low-content line also attaches a seal-product control. Seal products for sale must qualify under the Inuit and other indigenous communities’ exemption; exclude seal-derived ingredients from the agreed gel recipe. Confirm the commodity code using the full formula and composition results. For the wider heading, see electrolyte drink powders.

Specify the gel formula and sachet together

Specify the carbohydrate sources separately, including maltodextrin, glucose, fructose and sucrose. Agree carbohydrate, caffeine and electrolyte content per sachet, flavour, acidity, texture and whether the gel is intended to be taken with water. Identify every additive and any milk, honey, gelatine or collagen ingredient. Ask for the manufacturing process, storage conditions and shelf-life evidence for the finished sachet.

Confirm food safety requirements and declarations for allergens such as milk and soya with the relevant food authority. Nutrition labelling is compulsory on most pre-packed foods. Approve the English label against the actual recipe, and have caffeine warnings and performance wording reviewed before printing. Agree batch testing for composition and microbiological quality through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative airfreighted trial consignment of retail sports energy-gel sachets under 2106 90 98 49, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,500. Duty at 8% is £360. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,860, so it is £972. Import taxes total £1,332; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £360 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Formula: match batch records and analysis to the approved carbohydrate blend, caffeine content and electrolyte specification; keep retained samples.

Texture: compare taste, viscosity, separation and sugar crystallisation with the approved sample, including after storage under the agreed conditions.

Sachets: check fill weight, seal integrity, leakage, tear opening and whether the gel can be squeezed out without excessive residue.

Labels and batches: match ingredients, allergen declarations and nutrition information to the recipe; check legible batch and date markings against cartons and batch documents.

What goes wrong

A supplier’s generic sports-nutrition code can hide a different sugar composition. Recipe substitutions can change flavour, texture, declarations and the import route. A satisfactory fresh sample does not establish shelf life: separation, crystallisation or leaking seals can appear later.

Freeze the formula and packaging specification before production. Compare production samples with the approved gel, review batch evidence and hold leaking, swollen or unexplained off-taste stock for investigation. Use the quality inspection guide to define release checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sports energy gels from China?

The selected recipe-dependent lines carry 8% or 12% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the exact formula and code; these are not dedicated energy-gel classifications.

What should I specify for a caffeinated energy gel?

Agree caffeine content per sachet, the carbohydrate blend, flavour and texture. Match batch analysis to that specification and have the English label, including warning wording, reviewed before printing.

Can I import organic energy gels from China?

Organic imports need a Great Britain certificate of inspection issued by the exporter’s control body. Confirm the organic import arrangements before approving packaging or shipment.

Do energy gels containing milk need a health certificate?

A gel confirmed as a medium-risk composite product containing milk needs a composite product health certificate. Ask the broker to confirm China eligibility and the exact import route before ordering.
