Soy peptone duty and attached controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3504 covers peptones and their derivatives, other protein substances and their derivatives, and hide powder. For plain soy peptone, the residual line to check is 3504 00 90 99, carrying 2% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed. Its suspension covers zein, not soy peptone.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches veterinary control and organic-product import control to this line. Confirm whether veterinary control applies with your customs broker using the full composition and processing declaration. For organic food imports from China, ask the broker to confirm whether a Great Britain certificate of inspection is required; the exporter’s control body issues it. For laboratory-grade material carrying an organic claim, ask the broker to confirm the attached control’s application.

The table shows soy peptone purchasing variants under the same residual code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Give the broker the raw material, hydrolysis process, additives and intended use to confirm the commodity code. A prepared medium or food blend needs its own classification check. See the wider peptones guide.

Specify the digest and its growth performance

Specify soy as the protein source, the hydrolysis process and the origin of any processing enzymes. Ask for a declaration covering animal-derived ingredients and processing aids if your process depends on their absence. Agree total nitrogen, amino nitrogen, moisture, ash, solubility and acidity test methods, with acceptance criteria written into the purchase specification.

Name the intended culture medium or fermentation process. Compare the proposed batch with your retained reference using the organisms and preparation method you actually use. Agree growth performance, colour, clarity after sterilisation and microbiological acceptance criteria. A chemical analysis alone does not establish suitability for your process.

Check the UK REACH position for laboratory or industrial supply: registration responsibilities differ between businesses. If the material will be sold as a food ingredient, confirm applicable food-safety and soya-allergen requirements with the relevant food authority rather than relying on a laboratory-grade description.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 100 kg of soy peptone powder under 3504 00 90 99, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,500. Duty at 2% is £90. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,590, so it is £918. Import taxes total £1,008; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £90 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check the soy source, process declaration, additives and batch identity against the approved specification.

Analysis: match the batch certificate to the delivered lot and verify nitrogen, moisture, ash and solubility using the agreed methods.

Performance: test growth and clarity after your normal preparation and sterilisation against the retained reference.

Packing: check sealed liners, readable lot markings, dry powder and absence of dampness or damaged containers.

What goes wrong

A sample can work while the production lot gives weaker growth or more precipitate after sterilisation. Changed digestion conditions, ash or residual carbohydrates can alter performance even when total nitrogen looks similar. Release the delivered batch against both the analytical specification and your application test.

Moisture ingress can cause caking and make dosing uneven. Another failure is assuming that a soy source proves the whole process is free of animal-derived inputs. Obtain the processing declaration before ordering, and agree how the factory will notify you of changes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on soy peptone from China?

The residual line 3504 00 90 99 carries 2% duty for goods from China. No trade remedy is listed, and the zein suspension does not cover soy peptone.

Does soy peptone need veterinary checks?

The tariff line attaches veterinary control. Ask your broker to confirm applicability using the composition and processing declaration.

What should a soy peptone specification include?

Soy source, digestion process, processing-aid origin, nitrogen measures, moisture, ash, solubility and growth performance in your intended medium.

Is a certificate of analysis enough to approve a batch?

Use it alongside a batch application test. Compare growth, clarity after sterilisation and powder condition with the agreed specification and retained reference.
