Sourcing pea peptone from China

Pea peptone from China carries 2% UK duty on the relevant heading 3504 lines, with no listed trade remedy. Confirm classification from the hydrolysis process and composition; the pea-isolate suspension is not a general peptone exemption. For laboratory use, check whether UK REACH registration is required. Pea peptone classification and duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3504 covers peptones, their derivatives and other protein substances. The supplied pea-protein and residual protein lines both carry 2% duty for Chinese goods, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The table separates powder and liquid buying specifications under candidate codes; it does not establish their classification.

The pea-protein line has a 0% suspension limited to yellow-field-pea isolate powder with at least 80% protein on a dry basis. The residual line's suspension covers zein. Neither is a general pea-peptone exemption. Both lines attach veterinary and organic import controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether veterinary control applies to the actual formulation. For organic food imports, confirm with the relevant authority whether a Great Britain certificate of inspection is needed.

Give your broker the pea source, hydrolysis method, dry-basis protein result, additives and intended use to confirm the commodity code. Do not choose a code from the product name alone. See the soy-peptone guide for related sourcing within this heading.

Specify hydrolysis and culture performance

Specify the pea raw material, enzymatic or acid hydrolysis, powder or liquid form, and any carriers or preservatives. Request the origin of enzymes and processing aids when buying an animal-free formulation. Agree total nitrogen, amino nitrogen, moisture, ash, acidity, solubility and microbial acceptance criteria, with the analytical methods stated.

Approve the peptone in your actual culture medium or fermentation process. Compare growth, yield, colour, foaming and sediment against a retained reference batch. Ask for a batch certificate of analysis and change notification for raw material or processing changes.

For laboratory or industrial use, assess whether the substance requires UK REACH registration before importing it for the first time. Chemical classification and labelling must be handled by someone with scientific competence. If intended as food, ask the Food Standards Agency to confirm the applicable food safety requirements; do not treat a laboratory specification as evidence of food suitability.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 kg of pea peptone powder, with classification confirmed under 3504 00 90 99, invoiced at £1,170 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,470. Duty at 2% is £29.40. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,499.40, so it is £299.88. Import taxes total £329.28; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £29.40 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the purchase specification, batch number, pea source and hydrolysis method to the certificate of analysis.

Performance: test dissolution, sediment and growth in your intended medium against the approved batch.

Analysis: check nitrogen results and methods, moisture, ash and microbial results against agreed acceptance criteria.

Packing: inspect seals, liners, dampness and caking; match batch labels and storage instructions to the supplied documents.

What goes wrong

A protein result can meet the specification while peptide composition changes and culture performance falls. Residual salts, insoluble material or a different hydrolysis process can alter growth, foaming or filtration. Release stock against functional checks as well as the certificate.

An animal-free claim can overlook enzyme or processing-aid origin. Moisture ingress causes caking and makes sampling less representative. A supplier may also describe hydrolysed peptone as pea isolate and suggest a suspension without demonstrating eligibility. Resolve the formulation, packing and classification before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on pea peptone from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 2% on the relevant heading 3504 lines, with no listed trade remedy. The pea-isolate and zein suspensions are not general pea-peptone exemptions.

Which commodity code should I use for pea peptone?

Ask your broker to assess the hydrolysis process, composition and dry-basis protein result against 3504 00 90 91 and 3504 00 90 99. The trading name alone does not settle classification.

Does pea peptone need veterinary clearance?

The tariff attaches veterinary control. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether it applies to the actual formulation, taking account of processing-aid origins, before shipment.

How do I check pea peptone quality?

Match batch analysis to your agreed nitrogen, moisture, ash and microbial criteria. Test solubility, sediment and growth in your actual medium against an approved reference batch.
