Duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8443 covers printing machinery and its parts as well as other printers, copiers and fax machines. This guide concerns machines that print solder paste through a stencil onto circuit boards. For the wider product family, see screen printing machines.

All selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. These tariff findings do not replace machinery safety checks.

Treat the table as classification candidates, rather than interchangeable codes. Confirm your commodity code using the machine's printing method and intended application, or the spare part's material and function. Circuit-board assembly alone does not establish that a machine belongs in the semiconductor-production line.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify the stencil, board and printing process

Define manual, semi-automatic or automatic operation; board dimensions and thickness; stencil frame dimensions; underside component clearance; and the board support arrangement. For automated equipment, agree conveyor direction, rail adjustment, upstream and downstream interfaces, and the available electrical and compressed-air supplies.

Specify alignment cameras, fiducial recognition, squeegee material, pressure adjustment, print speed adjustment, stencil separation and underside cleaning. Ask the factory to print your board using your stencil and intended paste, recording settings and acceptance criteria for deposit position, completeness and consistency.

For powered machines supplied in Great Britain, check conformity marking, the declaration of conformity and English instructions. Ask for documents matching the purchased configuration, alongside electrical drawings and nameplate details. Assess testing and certification before approving the machine.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative order of a semi-automatic solder paste stencil printer under 8443 19 70 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,000, so it is £800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Printing: inspect deposits on representative boards for bridging, missing paste, smearing and alignment drift through repeated printing.

Board handling: check clamps and supports hold the board flat without damaging underside components; test loading, unloading and conveyor transfer where fitted.

Safety and documents: compare the machine identity with its declaration and manual; have a competent person check guards, interlocks and emergency stops without bypassing protection.

Arrival: inspect the stencil frame mount, cameras, rails and squeegee holders for movement or damage; repeat the agreed print trial after installation. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A demonstration using an easy board can conceal problems with your actual stencil and component layout. Unsupported boards flex, clamps obstruct the print area, camera alignment drifts and uneven squeegee pressure leaves inconsistent deposits. Accept the machine against your agreed trial rather than a supplier's demonstration video.

Missing cleaning consumables, inaccessible spare parts and undocumented software settings make recovery harder. Agree the supplied fixtures, replacement blades, cleaning materials, settings backup and commissioning responsibilities before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on solder paste stencil printers from China?

The selected machinery and parts lines under heading 8443 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff facts, read on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

Which commodity code covers a solder paste stencil printer?

8443 19 70 00 is a candidate for other printing machinery. Check the printing method and intended use before declaring it; the semiconductor-production line needs a matching application.

What paperwork should accompany a powered stencil printer?

For supply in Great Britain, check conformity marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Match the documents to the machine configuration and nameplate.

How should I test a stencil printer before shipment?

Use your board, stencil and intended paste. Check deposit alignment, bridging, missing paste and consistency through repeated prints, then repeat the trial after installation.
