Sodium bromide carries 4% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 2827 covers chlorides, chloride oxides and hydroxides, bromides and bromide oxides, and iodides and iodide oxides. Sodium bromide shares code 2827 51 00 00 with potassium bromide. The table shows different purchasing specifications within that shared line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Goods from China under this line carry 4% duty. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. It attaches import and export waste controls. Confirm their applicability with your customs broker, particularly for spent or recovered material. For imports into England under notification controls, shipment can begin only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved.

Confirm the commodity code against the composition and physical form before ordering. Do not assume that a formulated product containing sodium bromide belongs in the same line. See the potassium bromide guide for the related product within this heading.

Specify sodium bromide by assay and impurities

State the intended industrial or laboratory use, solid form, assay basis, moisture, chloride, sulphate, iron and insoluble matter limits. Agree test methods and whether assay is reported on the supplied material or a dry basis. Ask for a batch certificate of analysis and retain an approved sample.

For Great Britain, confirm the applicable UK REACH registration arrangements and any exemptions with HSE or your customs broker before ordering. Check the English safety data sheet and applicable hazard labelling before supply. Agree sealed moisture-resistant liners, outer packaging and batch identification rather than accepting a grade name alone.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative trial shipment of bagged technical-grade sodium bromide under 2827 51 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,000. Duty at 4% is £440. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,440, so it is £2,288. Import taxes total £2,728; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £440 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check that the purchase order, bag markings and batch certificate all name sodium bromide, with no substitution of potassium bromide.

Analysis: compare assay, moisture and agreed impurities with the contract; arrange independent testing of representative batch samples.

Packing: inspect seals, liners and outer bags for tears, leakage, dampness and hard caking; check net weights.

Traceability: match batch markings to the analysis certificate and delivery documents; retain samples and record arrival condition.

What goes wrong

A certificate can report dry-basis assay while the buyer expects the supplied material to meet that figure. Moisture, excess chloride or insoluble matter can then undermine the intended process. Specify the reporting basis and acceptance tests before production.

Damaged liners, mixed batches and certificates copied from earlier production leave the buyer unable to verify the delivery. Keep suspect stock separate while checking samples and records. Arrange quality inspection against the agreed specification before dispatch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sodium bromide from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 4% under 2827 51 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Does sodium bromide need UK REACH registration?

For Great Britain, confirm with HSE or your customs broker whether UK REACH registration or any exemption applies to your substance and annual import volume. Establish the applicable registration position before ordering.

What should a sodium bromide certificate of analysis show?

Batch identity, assay and its reporting basis, moisture, agreed impurities and test methods. Match it to the actual delivered batch.

Do the tariff waste controls apply to my sodium bromide?

The tariff attaches waste controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm applicability, especially for spent or recovered material. Notification-controlled waste imports into England need the relevant authorities’ consent.
