Sourcing Calcium Bromide from China

Calcium bromide from China carries 4% UK duty under the other bromides line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. The lithium bromide suspension does not cover calcium bromide. Check UK REACH registration and the applicable hazard labelling before supply in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources calcium bromide.

Calcium bromide: 4% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, calcium bromide falls within heading 2827, covering chlorides, bromides, iodides and their listed oxides and hydroxides. The relevant other bromides line is 2827 59 00 00. The table shows purchasing forms sharing this line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The recorded duty for goods from China is 4%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. The 0.00 % suspension on this line is restricted to qualifying lithium bromide and does not cover calcium bromide. The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Confirm their applicability with your customs broker, particularly for spent brine. For notified waste imports into England, shipment must await consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved.

Confirm the commodity code using the composition, water content and intended use, especially for brines containing other salts or additives. For wider bromide coverage, see sodium bromide from China.

Specify the solid or brine you need

State whether you want anhydrous solid, hydrated solid or aqueous brine. Define calcium bromide assay and whether it is reported on a dry or as-supplied basis. For brine, agree concentration, density at a stated temperature, insolubles and impurity limits. For solids, agree water content, particle form and acceptable caking. Request a batch certificate of analysis with test methods.

Check your UK REACH position before ordering. Confirm with HSE whether registration is required, whether an exemption applies and whether any transitional notification route is available to your business. Obtain an English safety data sheet and the applicable hazard labels where required. Classification and labelling must be carried out by someone with scientific competence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1 tonne of technical-grade calcium bromide solid under 2827 59 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £540 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,540. Duty at 4% is £101.60. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,641.60, so it is £528.32. Import taxes total £629.92; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £101.60 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the chemical name, hydration state and batch marking to the purchase specification and certificate.

Analysis: independently check assay, water content and agreed impurities; for brine, compare concentration and density at the agreed temperature.

Packaging: inspect solid-pack liners and seals, or liquid-container closures, for damage and leakage; check net weight and batch traceability.

Documents: match the safety data sheet and applicable labels to the supplied composition, and retain the batch test results.

What goes wrong

A dry-basis assay can make a hydrated or damp lot look stronger than the material you actually receive. Brine quoted by density alone can conceal a composition mismatch. Agree both the test basis and the acceptance criteria before the factory fills the order.

Watch for caked solids, leaking closures, sediment and certificates copied from a different batch. Hold suspect material apart from accepted stock and compare retained samples with arrival samples before using it in your process.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on calcium bromide from China?

The recorded duty is 4% under 2827 59 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The lithium bromide suspension does not apply to calcium bromide.

Does calcium bromide need UK REACH registration?

Confirm with HSE whether registration is required for your imports, whether an exemption applies and whether any transitional notification route is available to your business. Check your registration position before ordering.

What should a calcium bromide certificate of analysis show?

The batch identity, assay basis, water content and agreed impurity results with test methods. For brine, include concentration and density at the agreed temperature.

Can I buy calcium bromide brine using density alone?

Specify concentration and impurity limits as well as density at an agreed temperature. Tell your customs broker about other salts or additives before confirming the code.
