Sourcing ship rudder assemblies from China

Ship rudder assemblies and parts correctly classified under heading 8487 carry 0% UK duty from China across the selected lines. This residual heading applies only where no more specific classification fits. Agree vessel suitability, stock tolerances and material records before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources ship rudder assemblies.

Zero duty where heading 8487 applies

Heading 8487 covers machinery parts without electrical connectors, insulators, coils, contacts or other electrical features, not specified elsewhere in the chapter. This guide concerns ship rudder assemblies and their components that qualify for its residual lines. The table gives material-based candidates, rather than a classification for every complete assembly.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions, steel measures or attached import controls for these lines.

Give your customs broker the assembly drawing, material and manufacturing method, including whether steering machinery is supplied. Confirm the commodity code before using the table. Bearings, gears and valves have their own headings. Our propellers and machinery parts guide covers the wider heading.

Rudder stock fit, blade construction and vessel use

Specify the rudder blade profile, stock material and heat treatment, bearing journal diameters, straightness, surface finish, taper, keyway and coupling details. Identify supplied bearings, bushes, seals and fasteners. For welded blades, agree plate thickness, internal stiffeners, weld details and inspection acceptance criteria. Ask the vessel designer to confirm the drawing and service loads before production.

For vessels covered by the UK small fishing vessel safety code, steering gear, including bearings and rudder stock, must be of sound and efficient construction and suitable for the vessel's size and power. Agree how the supplier will demonstrate that suitability, rather than accepting a material certificate alone.

For recreational-craft use, check whether the supplied assembly is a separately marketed component covered by the Recreational Craft Regulations. For covered products, importers must check the manufacturer's conformity assessment, technical documentation, relevant marking and required documents. Instructions must be in English. Settle the applicable route before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 forged steel rudder stocks for small-boat repairs under 8487 90 57 90, invoiced at £27,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £29,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,000, so it is £5,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match stock and blade material certificates to component markings and heat records; check the specified heat treatment and hardness.

Fit: measure bearing journals, stock straightness, taper, keyway and coupling holes against the drawing; trial-fit the mating parts and check movement through the agreed travel.

Integrity: review the agreed casting, forging and weld inspection reports; check accessible surfaces for cracks, porosity, distortion and unapproved repairs.

Arrival: check for bent stocks, damaged seal surfaces, corrosion and missing hardware; reconcile the packing list and inspection records. Use the quality inspection guide to plan checks before shipment and on receipt.

What goes wrong

A rudder can match the overall outline yet fail to fit because its bearing journals, taper or keyway differ from the vessel drawing. Welding can distort the blade or stock alignment. Hidden casting or forging defects, incorrect heat treatment and damaged seal surfaces can leave an apparently finished assembly unsuitable for installation.

Approve a first article with dimensional and material records before releasing the batch. Agree defect acceptance and repair approval in writing, protect machined surfaces during transport, and ask the installer to confirm fit before commissioning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ship rudder assemblies from China?

The selected heading 8487 lines carry 0% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that the exact assembly belongs in this residual heading.

What documents should I request for a rudder stock?

Request material certificates linked to the stock, heat-treatment records, a dimensional report and the agreed defect-testing reports. Match the records to the delivered component.

Do ship rudder assemblies need CE or UKCA marking?

Check the product's scope first. For components covered by the Recreational Craft Regulations in Great Britain, relevant conformity marking and documentation are required. Confirm the route for the exact assembly.

Can a factory copy my existing rudder?

Use the existing rudder as a reference, then agree a drawing covering stock fit, blade profile, materials and mating connections. Wear or corrosion can make an old component an unreliable dimensional master.
