Sourcing self-aligning ball bearings from China
Self-aligning ball bearings from China normally carry 8% UK duty. Related parts carry 6% to 8% before applicable suspensions. The main rule is to match the commodity code and any relief to the actual goods and use; a suspension is not a general discount. Cambridge China Bridge sources self-aligning ball bearings.

Normally 8% duty on complete bearings
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, complete self-aligning ball bearings fall within the ball-bearing lines of heading 8482, normally at 8% duty from China. The relevant ordinary lines distinguish greatest outside diameter not exceeding 30 mm from larger bearings. Related replacement balls carry 6%; other bearing parts have an 8% base rate.
The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls for the selected lines. It lists 0% authorised-use suspensions on the ordinary ball-bearing lines for narrowly specified goods and uses, and a 0% autonomous suspension on other bearing parts. Do not assume an ordinary self-aligning bearing qualifies: the supplied suspension descriptions are incomplete, so have your broker check the full conditions.
Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, outside diameter and whether the shipment contains complete bearings or separate parts. Bearing housings and plain shaft bearings belong to heading 8483. See the wider ball and roller bearings guide for related products.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-aligning ball bearings, greatest outside diameter up to 30 mm, other | 8482 10 10 90 | 8% | None |
| Self-aligning ball bearings, greatest outside diameter over 30 mm | 8482 10 90 00 | 8% | None |

| Other bearing parts, including finished rings and cages | 8482 99 00 90 | 8% | None |
Specify the bore, clearance and alignment
Specify self-aligning ball bearings explicitly, rather than spherical roller bearings. Agree the designation, bore, outside diameter, width, cylindrical or tapered bore, cage material, internal clearance, lubrication and sealing arrangement. If an adapter sleeve is needed, identify it separately and check the shaft and housing fit.
Provide the intended load, speed, operating temperature and shaft misalignment. Ask the factory to confirm suitability against those conditions and supply the drawing and performance data for the exact bearing. Use ISO 492 for the agreed tolerance class, and obtain material and heat-treatment records.
Agree an inspection method for alignment movement and rotation in the intended mounting arrangement. Check branded goods for authenticity; ask the relevant authority about any trade mark implications before selling suspected counterfeit bearings. Suspected infringing goods can also be detained at the border.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed batch of self-aligning ball bearings for a machinery spares business under 8482 10 90 00, invoiced at £36,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £37,500. Duty at 8% is £3,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £40,500, so it is £8,100. Import taxes total £11,100; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions and fit: measure bore, outside diameter and width against the approved drawing; check the bore form and any sleeve against the intended shaft.
Clearance and movement: measure radial internal clearance against the agreed group, check alignment movement without binding, and run samples under the agreed test conditions.
Material and finish: match material and hardness records to the batch; inspect raceways, balls and cages for damage, contamination and corrosion.
Lubrication and identity: check grease or preservative, seals where supplied, bearing markings, batch identification and dry protective packaging on arrival.

What goes wrong
A bearing with the right outside dimensions can still have the wrong bore form, clearance or cage. A mismatched sleeve or mounting fit can change clearance after installation. Alignment movement does not compensate for an unsuitable load rating or a poorly specified mounting arrangement.
Poor heat treatment, damaged raceways and contaminated lubricant cause early noise or failure. Damp packaging can leave rust before installation. Keep the approved sample, drawing and batch records together, and agree the quality inspection checks before production.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on self-aligning ball bearings from China?
Complete bearings normally carry 8% duty. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Narrow authorised-use suspensions require checking against the exact goods and use.
Are self-aligning ball bearings the same as spherical roller bearings?
No. Specify ball bearings explicitly and check the drawing and rolling elements. The tariff has a separate line for spherical roller bearings.
What should I put in a self-aligning bearing specification?
Include designation, dimensions, bore form, clearance, cage, lubrication, seals and mounting arrangement, plus the intended load, speed, temperature and misalignment.
How do I check a Chinese bearing supplier's sample?
Measure dimensions and clearance, check alignment movement and rotation, review material and hardness records, and inspect lubrication, markings and rust protection.
