Sourcing instrumentation tubes from China

The supplied stainless-tube lines show 0% UK duty for China, but omit cold-drawn stainless tubing, so they do not establish the rate for every instrumentation order. Check the manufacturing route and pressure-equipment scope before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources seamless stainless-steel instrumentation tubes.

Duty and the missing cold-drawn category

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7304 covers seamless tubes, pipes and hollow profiles of iron other than cast iron, or steel. Instrumentation buyers should establish the stainless grade, circular cross-section and manufacturing route. The supplied snapshot omits the cold-drawn stainless category, so it cannot confirm classification or duty for a cold-drawn instrumentation tube.

Every stainless-steel line supplied carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel measure or attached import control. The table shows available stainless categories for comparison; its larger-diameter and other-profile rows are not typical instrumentation tubing. Do not select a listed category merely because the intended category is absent. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Give your customs broker the manufacturing route, material specification, dimensions and intended use, and confirm the current commodity code before shipment. For the wider tube family, see seamless stainless-steel heat-exchanger tubes. The UK carbon border adjustment mechanism starts on 1 January 2027; review future exposure with your broker rather than treating ordinary duty as the complete tax position.

Specify the tube and its fitting interface

Specify seamless manufacture, stainless grade, outside diameter, wall thickness and tolerances, straight lengths or coils, annealed condition, hardness acceptance, surface finish and internal cleanliness. Give the intended compression-fitting supplier your tube specification for review. Agree how the mill will demonstrate material identity, heat traceability and the requested pressure, leak or non-destructive testing.

For Great Britain, pressure-equipment safety rules cover equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar. Separately supplied components can also constitute finished products. Ask your compliance adviser to assess the actual supply, whether plain tube, fabricated piping or an assembly, before deciding the conformity route. Specify the fluid, operating conditions and intended installation alongside the purchase drawing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of straight seamless stainless instrumentation tubes, conditional on confirmed classification under 7304 49 83 90, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £36,000, so it is £7,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match tube and bundle heat references to mill certificates and ordered grade; agree material identity checks where certificate traceability is uncertain.

Dimensions: measure outside diameter, wall thickness, ovality and straightness against the purchase specification, including tube ends that enter compression fittings.

Condition: inspect for scratches, dents, surface cracks and damaged ends; check that bores are clean and end caps remain secure after transport.

Fit and records: trial the intended fitting on representative tubes using its supplier's procedure, and match agreed test records to the delivered batch. Define the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A tube can match the nominal diameter yet fail the fitting trial because of ovality, hardness or surface damage. Mixed heats weaken traceability, while residual drawing lubricant and loose debris undermine the agreed cleanliness. Inspect these features before shipment and repeat arrival checks before releasing stock for installation.

A generic certificate does not establish that the delivered batch meets your specification. Another mistake is treating the absence of a cold-drawn category in this snapshot as permission to use an alternative code. Obtain batch-specific records and settle classification before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on instrumentation tubes from China?

The supplied stainless lines show 0%. Cold-drawn stainless tubing is absent from the snapshot, so confirm the exact code and current duty before relying on that rate for your order.

Do seamless instrumentation tubes need CE or UKCA marking?

Assess the actual product and pressure-equipment scope first. Separately supplied components can be finished products; a plain-tube description alone does not settle the applicable conformity route.

What should I ask the Chinese tube mill to supply?

Ask for batch-linked material certificates, heat references, dimensional results, heat-treatment details and the agreed test records. State fitting compatibility and cleanliness acceptance in the order.

How do I check tubing for compression fittings?

Check diameter, ovality, wall thickness, hardness and surface condition against the agreed specification. Trial representative tubes with the intended fitting using its supplier's procedure.
