Zero customs duty, with Alcohol Duty separate

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 2205 covers vermouth and other fresh-grape wine flavoured with plants or aromatic substances. All listed lines carry 0% customs duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension. For a sangria recipe, start by checking the lower-strength lines. The higher-strength rows are heading comparisons.

The tariff attaches an import control for organic products. Chinese goods intended to be released as organic need an inspection certificate. The exporter's control body issues that certificate. Without the required certificate, the tariff says organic references must be removed from labels, advertising and accompanying documents before release for free circulation. Confirm the certificate arrangements with your organic control body and customs broker before shipment.

Give your broker the complete recipe, actual alcoholic strength and container capacity to confirm the commodity code. The vermouth guide covers the wider heading. Ask HMRC or your customs broker to confirm any separate Alcohol Duty liability and its calculation. Agree the excise payment route before shipping.

Specify the sangria recipe and sales name

Specify the base wine, citrus extracts or essences, juice, sweetness, acidity, spices, carbonation and any pulp or peel. Record the complete formulation, including preservatives and any added alcohol. Agree the intended alcoholic strength, sensory sample, storage conditions, shelf life, bottle or can format and closure.

For Great Britain, Sangria cannot be the sole sales name for a Chinese-made product: that sales denomination is reserved for production in Spain or Portugal. Have the complete sales description reviewed before approving artwork. Labels must give the applicable allergen information. Match the declared strength, net quantity and UK business details to the approved specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 bottles of 500 ml sangria, subject to recipe classification and label review under 2205 10 10 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £13,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,500, so it is £2,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14 lists alcoholic beverages among the exceptions that are standard-rated even though most food is zero-rated, so the 20% VAT shown applies.

Inspection checklist

Liquid: compare colour, citrus aroma, sweetness, acidity, carbonation and pulp with the approved sample; investigate unexpected cloudiness or renewed fermentation.

Analysis: test alcoholic strength and relevant preservatives against the specification, and reconcile the results with the label and batch analysis certificate.

Packaging: check fill levels, leaking closures, can seams, bottle breakage, carton dividers and the legibility of batch markings on arrival.

Documents: match the delivered batch to the invoice, packing list, formulation and analysis certificate; check the organic inspection certificate where applicable.

What goes wrong

A supplier's domestic artwork may use Sangria as the entire sales name, leaving the buyer with labels that need review before sale in Great Britain. A fruit-wine blend or a changed recipe can also undermine the assumed commodity code. Settle the formulation, classification and label together before production.

Practical failures include drifting citrus flavour, excessive sediment, renewed fermentation, leaking caps and crushed cartons. Retain the approved sample and compare production and arrival samples. Budget Alcohol Duty separately from customs duty, and use a quality inspection brief that covers the liquid and its packaging.
