Sourcing mulled wine from China

Mulled grape wine from China qualifying under heading 2205 carries 0% customs duty across the supplied lines. Alcohol Duty is separate, so a duty-free customs rate does not mean a tax-free shipment. Check the recipe, strength, labels and any organic claim before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources mulled wine.

0% customs duty, with Alcohol Duty separate

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 2205 covers vermouth and other wine of fresh grapes flavoured with plants or aromatic substances. This guide concerns mulled grape wine. The supplied lines divide by container capacity and actual alcoholic strength. The stronger spiced-wine rows are classification options for relevant recipes, rather than a suggested mulled-wine specification. See the wider vermouth guide.

All supplied lines show 0% customs duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. Alcohol imports become liable for UK Excise Duty on arrival. The tariff also attaches an organic import control. Organic-labelled imports need an inspection certificate; the exporter’s control body issues it. Confirm the complete organic clearance requirements with your customs broker before shipment.

Give your broker the full recipe, grape-wine base, measured alcoholic strength and container capacity to confirm the commodity code. Do not classify from the seasonal product name alone. Budget Alcohol Duty separately from customs duty, and use the duty and VAT guide when building the landed-cost calculation.

Specify the wine base and spice recipe

Specify the red or white grape-wine base, whether alcohol or water is added, sugar level, cinnamon and clove profile, citrus ingredients, preservatives and filtration. Agree the bottled alcoholic strength, colour, acceptable sediment, closure, pack format and storage instructions. Keep an approved sample and assess it both cold and warmed using the intended serving method.

Review the product name and label before printing. Include the name, net quantity and alcoholic strength, and ask the relevant food authority or your label reviewer to confirm business name, address and allergen-information requirements. The name, net quantity and alcoholic strength must be visible together. Ask the supplier to disclose sulphites and any milk or egg fining agents so the label reviewer has the full recipe and processing information.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 bottles of 500 ml mulled grape wine, alcohol not exceeding 18%; FOB and freight values are illustrative whole pounds. under 2205 10 10 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £13,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,500, so it is £2,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14 lists alcoholic beverages among the exceptions that are standard-rated even though most food is zero-rated, so the 20% VAT shown applies.

Inspection checklist

Liquid: compare batch samples with the approved sample for spice balance, sweetness, colour, clarity and taste after warming; investigate unexpected haze or sediment.

Analysis: check measured alcoholic strength against the specification and label, and review the batch analysis and allergen information against the disclosed recipe.

Packaging: check fill levels, cap seals, leaks, glass damage, carton dividers and pallet stability; for bulk packs, inspect the tap and inner bag.

Documents: match batch identifiers across bottles, cartons and analysis reports; check approved artwork and any organic inspection certificate against the shipment.

What goes wrong

A sample can taste balanced cold but become bitter or lose its spice character when warmed. Changes in the wine base, sweetener or spice extract can alter repeat orders. Test production samples using the buyer’s serving method and record the agreed flavour and appearance.

Leaking closures, damaged glass and labels that do not match the recipe can leave seasonal stock difficult to sell. Another costing error is treating 0% customs duty as the complete tax position. Agree batch acceptance checks and the excise arrangements before dispatch; use the inspection guide to brief the inspector.
