Duty on replacement walking-stick ferrules
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6603 covers parts, trimmings and accessories of umbrellas and walking sticks. Replacement ferrules accepted under the other-parts line, 6603 90 90 00, carry 0% duty from China. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows product variants under the same line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.
The line attaches CITES, seal-product and cat-and-dog-fur import controls. Check CITES permits with APHA if the material includes a listed species. Imports of cat and dog fur, including products made from it, are banned. For seal-derived material, the UK Trade Tariff attaches a control: ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirement before ordering. Ask the factory to identify the complete material composition.
Confirm the commodity code against the ferrule's material, construction and intended stick, rather than accepting a supplier's code without review. Complete sticks are covered in the walking sticks and seat-sticks guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

Specify the bore, compound and tread
Specify the shaft outside diameter, ferrule bore and insertion depth, fit tolerance, overall height, base shape and tread pattern. Identify the rubber or plastic compound and agreed hardness, colour and reinforcing insert. Supply an actual shaft sample alongside the drawing, and approve the assembled fit. Agree tests for retention, wear and grip on the surfaces named in your sales claims.
For consumer ferrules supplied in Great Britain, general product safety rules require safe products. For mobility-stick replacements, write down the manufacturer's intended use and have the regulatory status reviewed before approving claims or markings. Medical-device accessory status depends on an established intended use with a medical device. Do not assume that the complete stick's paperwork covers a separately sourced ferrule.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 3,000 replacement walking-stick ferrules under 6603 90 90 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,900, so it is £580. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: measure sampled bores and insertion depths, fit them to the approved shafts, and check that the shaft seats fully without splitting the ferrule.
Retention: pull and twist assembled samples using the agreed method, then repeat after the agreed loading and wear checks.
Base: check tread moulding, cracks, voids and uneven seating; inspect reinforcing inserts for movement, exposed edges and shaft penetration.
Packing: compare size identification, fitting instructions and compatibility claims with the approved specification. Keep different sizes separated and retain batch samples for quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A loose bore lets the ferrule detach; an undersized bore can split during fitting. A shallow socket leaves the shaft poorly supported, while a misplaced insert allows the shaft to punch through the base. Changes in compound can alter grip and wear even when the replacement looks like the approved sample.
Avoid a universal-fit claim based only on appearance. Check production ferrules on the actual shaft range, agree what counts as a failed grip or retention test, and require approval before the factory changes the compound, mould or insert. Review sales claims alongside the test evidence before releasing stock.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on replacement walking-stick ferrules from China?
Ferrules accepted under 6603 90 90 00 carry 0% duty from China. Confirm classification for your product.
How do I choose the right replacement ferrule size?
Measure the shaft outside diameter and agree the bore, insertion depth and fit tolerance. Test the ferrule on an actual shaft sample; the size printed on a packet does not prove compatibility.
Are replacement walking-stick ferrules medical-device accessories?
Accessory status depends on established intended use with a medical device. Have the manufacturer's purpose, compatibility claims and replacement function reviewed before deciding the regulatory route.
How do I check that a ferrule will grip?
Agree a test method and the surfaces covered by the claim. Test production samples on those surfaces, including wet conditions if claimed, and repeat after wear. Appearance alone does not establish grip.
