Duty on separate replacement stretchers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6603 covers parts, trimmings and accessories of umbrellas and walking sticks. Separate replacement stretchers fall within other parts, provisionally 6603 90 90 00, carrying 0% duty from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table distinguishes stretcher variants sharing that code.

The tariff attaches CITES, seal-product and cat-and-dog-fur import controls to this line. For CITES specimens, apply for a permit and confirm documents with your customs broker. Cat and dog fur products are banned from import. Seal products for sale in Great Britain must qualify under the Inuit and other indigenous communities’ exemption and have a seal catch certificate. For a China shipment containing animal-derived material, confirm eligibility before ordering.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, materials and photographs showing whether the shipment contains loose stretchers or assembled frames. For related frame components, see replacement umbrella ribs.

Specify the stretcher geometry and joints

A stretcher links the sliding runner to a canopy rib. Specify pivot-centre spacing, section shape, material, thickness, end-slot orientation, hole diameter and rivet arrangement. For folding umbrellas, identify each articulated link and its position. Supply a drawing and a matching umbrella frame, rather than asking the factory to copy overall length alone.

Agree coating, acceptable joint play, replacement fasteners and packing that protects projecting ends. Approve a fitted sample that opens, locks and folds without interference. Consumer repair parts supplied in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use; check sharp edges, trapped fingers and joint failure in the intended assembled frame.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10,000 replacement steel umbrella stretchers; FOB and freight values are illustrative. under 6603 90 90 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,800, so it is £760. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure pivot spacing, hole size, section thickness and end orientation against the approved drawing; keep different link positions separate.

Fit: install samples in the intended runner and rib joints; check rivet seating, clearance and joint play throughout opening and folding.

Strength: cycle fitted samples using the agreed procedure; look for permanent bending, cracked ends, loose rivets and joints pulling through.

Finish and packing: check burrs, rust, coating damage and bent links on arrival; compare carton labels and contents with the ordered frame variants.

What goes wrong

A stretcher can match overall length but have the wrong pivot spacing or end orientation. It may force the rib out of position, stop the runner locking or obstruct folding. Thin sections can buckle, punched holes can tear and poorly seated rivets can loosen. Compare replacements in the actual frame before approving production.

Mixed link positions and transit bending can make otherwise usable parts difficult to fit. Separate variants in labelled packs and retain the fitted approval sample for quality inspection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on replacement umbrella stretchers from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% under 6603 90 90 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm classification for the actual shipment.

Are umbrella stretchers the same as ribs?

No. Stretchers connect the sliding runner to the canopy ribs. Order by the link’s position, pivot spacing and end fittings, with a drawing or fitted sample.

Will a stretcher of the same length fit my umbrella?

Not necessarily. Pivot spacing, hole diameter, section shape and end orientation must also match. Fit samples in the intended frame and check opening, locking and folding.

What safety rule applies when selling replacement stretchers?

For consumer repair parts supplied in Great Britain, general product safety rules require safety in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Check the part in its intended frame.
