Sourcing replacement fridge compressors from China

Replacement refrigeration compressors from China normally carry 2% UK duty; narrowly specified manufacturing suspensions can reduce it to 0%. Work with fluorinated gas requires the correct qualifications. Match the replacement to the system's refrigerant, oil and operating conditions. Cambridge China Bridge sources replacement refrigeration compressors.

UK duty on replacement refrigeration compressors

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, refrigeration compressors within heading 8414 carried a standard Chinese-origin duty of 2%. The relevant lines recorded no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls. The tariff distinguishes power and hermetic or semi-hermetic construction.

Zero-rate suspensions have narrow scopes. The suspension on 8414 30 81 60 concerns specified rotary compressors for manufacturing household-appliance heat pumps; 8414 30 89 20 describes vehicle air-conditioning compressors. On 8414 30 89 90, the suspension is limited to specified open-shaft scroll compressors for manufacturing motor vehicles. These suspensions exclude mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing those products. Do not assume an ordinary replacement qualifies.

Confirm the commodity code using the compressor specification and intended use. The detailed production description on 8414 30 20 60 must match the goods; otherwise check the other applicable line. For complete assemblies rather than standalone replacements, see refrigeration condensing units.

Match the compressor to the existing circuit

Give the supplier the existing compressor model, refrigerant, lubricant type and charge, cooling duty at stated evaporating and condensing conditions, operating envelope, motor power, voltage, phase and frequency. Specify mounting centres, suction and discharge connections, terminal arrangement, starting components and any inverter or controller needed.

Ask whether the unit ships uncharged, with a holding gas or with refrigerant. Obtain the model-specific safety documents and ask the supplier to identify whether it is supplied as machinery or partly completed machinery. For machinery, the responsible person must ensure that a technical file is compiled and available on request.

Anyone working with fluorinated gas must hold the correct qualifications. Arrange the replacement work with an appropriately qualified refrigeration engineer, and have them approve the proposed refrigerant, oil and operating envelope before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 replacement refrigeration compressors under 8414 30 20 90, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,900. Duty at 2% is £138. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,038, so it is £1,407.60. Import taxes total £1,545.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £138 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the model, serial identification, nameplate and supplied starting components with the approved specification.

Fit: check mounting centres, connection positions, terminal cover, connectors and clearance against the existing installation.

Condition: inspect the shell, feet and pipe stubs for damage, check sealed connections and look for oil leakage or corrosion on arrival.

Performance: request recorded leak, electrical and running tests for the shipped models, with cooling performance measured under the agreed conditions. Use the inspection guide to plan the checks.

What goes wrong

A supplier's cross-reference can hide a different operating envelope, oil charge or starting arrangement. Similar shell dimensions and headline capacity do not establish interchangeability. Ask the engineer to approve the performance map and wiring, and require written approval before any model substitution.

Open pipe ends, damaged mounts and missing terminal protection can turn an apparently usable replacement into a rejected delivery. Keep photographs and test records tied to the model and shipment, and agree the evidence needed for a replacement claim before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on replacement refrigeration compressors from China?

The relevant lines carry 2% standard duty, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Narrow manufacturing suspensions provide 0% only where their descriptions and conditions are met.

Can I buy a compressor using only the old model number?

Use it as a starting point. Also match refrigerant, lubricant, operating envelope, electrical supply, starting components, mounting centres and pipe connections.

Who can replace a compressor in a system containing fluorinated gas?

Anyone working with fluorinated gas must have the correct qualifications. Have an appropriately qualified refrigeration engineer approve the replacement and carry out the work.

What should I check when replacement compressors arrive?

Check model identification, mounting and connections, sealed pipe ends, terminal protection and transit damage. Match the shipment to the agreed electrical, leak and performance test records.
