0% duty on separately supplied runners

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6603 covers parts, trimmings and accessories of umbrellas, parasols and walking sticks. Separately supplied replacement parasol runners fall within other parts, 6603 90 90 00, carrying 0% duty from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. The runner variants in the table share this commodity line.

The tariff attaches CITES, seal-product and cat-and-dog-fur import controls to this line. For CITES-listed materials, confirm the applicable permit requirements before shipment from China. Cat and dog fur and products made from it are banned from import. Imported seal products face a market prohibition with limited exceptions; ask your customs broker to confirm any exemption and accompanying documents. Specify the runner material and disclose any animal-derived trim.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, material details and the condition in which the goods are shipped. A loose runner is different from a complete frame or parasol. See the umbrella frames and parts guide for the wider heading.

Match the runner to the parasol mechanism

Send an original runner and a mating shaft sample, supported by a dimensioned drawing. Specify bore shape and clearance, sleeve length, stretcher attachment positions, pin holes, catch engagement and assembly method. Agree material, coating, colour and packing. Approve the replacement fitted to the intended parasol, rather than approving its appearance alone.

Assess the fitted runner for finger traps, sharp edges, catch release and joint failure. Ask for installation instructions identifying compatible parasol models and showing how to secure the stretcher joints.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 replacement plastic parasol runners under 6603 90 90 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £992 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,992. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,992, so it is £598.40. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the bore and mating features against the drawing; slide samples along the intended shaft and check for binding or excessive play.

Catch: open and close an assembled sample repeatedly; check that the catch engages fully, holds the runner and releases deliberately.

Joints: check stretcher attachment lugs, holes and pins for alignment, cracking, loose retention and interference throughout movement.

Finish and packing: check moulding flash, burrs, rust and coating damage; compare material and colour with the approved sample. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspection.

What goes wrong

A runner can look correct but jam because its bore shape or clearance differs from the original. Misplaced attachment holes change the stretcher geometry, preventing full opening. A catch that only partly engages can release unexpectedly; thin attachment lugs can crack during assembly.

Avoid compatibility claims based only on shaft diameter. Keep the approved drawing and fitted sample with the order specification, and check production samples on the actual mechanism before accepting the batch.
