Sourcing remote control cars from China
Remote control cars from China fall within relevant toy lines carrying 0% to 4% UK duty; plastic motorised models carry 4%. Confirm applicable toy safety requirements for children's versions with the relevant authority; radio equipment must meet its essential requirements before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources remote control cars.

Duty depends on materials and presentation
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 December 2026, heading 9503 covers toys and recreational models. Plastic motorised toys under 9503 00 75 00 carry 4% duty from China; motorised toys of other materials under 9503 00 79 00 carry 0%. Scale-model assembly kits carry 0%, while other toy sets carry 4%. The table gives possible classifications, not interchangeable codes.
The selected lines record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The suspension on the plastic motorised-toy line applies only to specified cable-car scale models for printing, not remote control cars. Both motorised-toy lines attach cat and dog fur import and export controls: products containing such fur cannot be imported. The selected lines also attach cultural-goods export licensing; ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance to any onward export.
Confirm the commodity code using the complete car, materials, motor and retail contents. A car packaged with its controller is not automatically classified as a toy set. For separately supplied controllers, see the wider model vehicle transmitter guide. Have the broker check mixed-material cars and assembly kits against their actual construction.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic motorised remote control cars | 9503 00 75 00 | 4% | None |
| Motorised remote control cars of other materials | 9503 00 79 00 | 0% | None |
| Scale-model car assembly kits | 9503 00 30 00 | 0% | None |
| Remote control car play sets, where classified as other toy sets | 9503 00 70 00 | 4% | None |
Specify the car, controller and charging system
Specify intended users, dimensions, body and chassis materials, drive arrangement, steering response, tyres, suspension and replaceable parts. Identify the controller and receiver, operating frequency, pairing method and behaviour when the radio connection is lost. Agree how speed, range and running time will be checked against the approved sample.
State battery chemistry, capacity, connector, polarity, retention method and the exact charging equipment supplied. Approve a complete boxed sample with instructions and accessories. Require approval before changes to the motor, radio board, battery or charger, and match supporting reports to the supplied configuration.
For children's toy versions, confirm with the relevant authority the applicable conformity assessment, declaration, technical documentation, importer identification and marking requirements before sale in Great Britain, including whether CE or UKCA is appropriate. Radio equipment must also meet its essential requirements. Electrical-equipment producers must register annually; confirm your business's status with its environmental regulator. Agree the product assessment through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 400 plastic motorised remote control cars, illustrative order only under 9503 00 75 00, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £1,300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,300. Duty at 4% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,552, so it is £1,310.40. Import taxes total £1,562.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Driving and steering: check forward and reverse operation, straight tracking, steering centring, wheel retention, gear noise and suspension movement against the approved sample.
Radio operation: pair the supplied controller, operate nearby sampled cars together, and check response and loss-of-connection behaviour under the agreed test conditions.
Battery and charging: check connector polarity, secure battery retention, cable damage, charging operation and unusual heating, swelling or odour.
Packing and documents: match cars, controllers, batteries and chargers to the approved contents list and compliance documents. Check labels, instructions, broken body mounts and crushed cartons. Agree checks using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
A demonstration car can conceal weak production gears, loose steering links or inconsistent wheel alignment. Controllers may fail to pair with substituted receiver boards. A battery connector can fit physically while having reversed polarity, and charging instructions may describe equipment absent from the box.
Compare production and arrival samples with the retained approved car and component list. Record substitutions, damaged battery packs and uncontrolled movement before distribution. Recheck the supporting documents when the radio board, motor, battery or charging equipment changes.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.
