Sourcing refrigerated air dryers from China

Refrigerated compressed-air dryers and the related lines shown carry 0% UK duty from China. Confirm machinery safety requirements for sale or use in Great Britain with the relevant authority, and check refrigerant controls before shipment. Specify drying performance at your actual operating conditions. Cambridge China Bridge sources refrigerated compressed-air dryers.

UK duty on refrigerated compressed-air dryers

Heading 8419 covers non-domestic equipment that treats materials through temperature change, including drying. The other-dryers line is a candidate for a complete refrigerated compressed-air dryer. The table also identifies separately imported heat exchangers and parts, plus an other-plant comparison line. These are not interchangeable codes for the same shipment.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 December 2026, all selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspensions. The dryer and other-plant lines have fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls. Give your broker the refrigerant identity, charge and annual import quantities to confirm the applicable requirements. Where quota authorisations or delegations are required, pre-charged equipment cannot be imported into Great Britain without enough cover.

Confirm the commodity code using the drying principle, circuit drawings and actual shipment contents. Describe whether the dryer is supplied separately or integrated with other machinery. For the wider compressed-air equipment purchase, see air compressors.

Specify pressure dew point and operating conditions

Specify air flow together with inlet pressure, inlet air temperature and ambient temperature. State the required outlet pressure dew point and acceptable pressure drop. Ask the factory to identify the rating conditions and demonstrate performance at your agreed duty. A capacity figure without its operating conditions is insufficient for comparing offers.

Agree air-cooled or water-cooled construction, electrical supply, connection threads, condensate separator and automatic drain arrangement. Record refrigerant identity and charge, heat-exchanger materials, maintenance access and replacement components. Ask for a circuit drawing showing the air path, refrigerant circuit and drain connections.

Confirm machinery safety requirements before placement on the Great Britain market or use with the relevant authority. Request the model's conformity declaration, English instructions and applicable markings. For pressure equipment above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure, confirm with the relevant authority whether pressure-equipment rules apply and whether any exclusions are relevant. Establish the applicable category and conformity route for the assembly through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of refrigerated compressed-air dryers for workshop installations; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8419 39 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,000, so it is £3,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Drying performance: witness a loaded run and record flow, inlet pressure, inlet temperature, ambient temperature, outlet pressure dew point and pressure drop. Compare measured results with the agreed acceptance conditions.

Condensate removal: check separator installation, automatic drain operation and drainage connections during the running test. Look for retained condensate, air leakage and water carried into the outlet.

Assembly and controls: inspect pipe joints, condenser fins, fan clearance, electrical connections and mounting supports. Have a competent inspector demonstrate agreed alarms and protective responses safely.

Arrival and documents: inspect transit damage, displaced pipework and loose connections. Match the nameplate, refrigerant information, declaration, instructions and test records to the delivered model. Plan a written inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A dryer selected from nominal flow alone can miss the agreed dew point when inlet air or ambient conditions differ from the factory rating. A cold-looking display does not prove outlet pressure dew point. Require a recorded loaded test. Blocked drains, damaged separators and restricted ventilation can also undermine drying performance.

A refrigerant substitution can leave the delivered machine inconsistent with its paperwork. Confirm applicable labelling requirements for imported equipment containing fluorinated gas with the relevant authority, and products containing banned fluorinated gases must not be placed on the Great Britain market. Check the refrigerant against the applicable product bans before approving shipment, and have your broker confirm the tariff control requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on refrigerated air dryers from China?

The supplied heading 8419 dryer, heat-exchanger, other-plant and parts lines all carry 0% duty, with no listed trade remedies or suspensions. Confirm the complete dryer's code and refrigerant controls.

What drying performance should I specify?

Specify outlet pressure dew point and acceptable pressure drop at your air flow, inlet pressure, inlet temperature and ambient temperature. Ask for measured results at those conditions.

Can I import a dryer already charged with refrigerant?

Have your broker check the refrigerant, charge and applicable import requirements. Where quota cover is required, pre-charged equipment cannot be imported into Great Britain without enough authorisations or delegations.

What should I check when the dryer arrives?

Inspect pipework, condenser fins, mounts and electrical connections for transit damage. Match documents to the model, then repeat the agreed drying, pressure-drop and condensate-drain checks after installation.
