UK duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, heading 6307 covers other made-up articles. For woven textile ratchet strap assemblies, 6307 90 98 99 is a candidate to confirm with your customs broker. The table shows product variants against the same tariff line, rather than separate classifications. For related rope products, see rope, twine and cordage.

The candidate line carries 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded. Its suspension is restricted to the textile face masks described in the tariff footnote; it does not describe ratchet straps. The tariff attaches CITES import and export controls, a torture-and-repression import prohibition and an associated export restriction. Ask your customs broker to confirm their application to the actual materials and cargo-securing design.

Send photographs, webbing construction, material composition, fittings and intended use when confirming the commodity code. Do not accept the factory’s code without checking the finished assembly.

Specify the complete strap assembly

Write down the cargo, vehicle attachment points and intended securing method. Specify webbing material, width, finished length, stitched joint construction, hook shape, ratchet handle and protective sleeves. Include the short fixed section as well as the adjustable section, and approve a complete assembled sample.

Ask for declared lashing capacity, tension performance and test reports identifying the exact assembly supplied. Request testing of the webbing, stitched joints, ratchet and end fittings together. Agree label artwork, batch identification and operating instructions before production. Products should only be sold after their compliance with product safety regulations has been demonstrated appropriately.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 800 woven ratchet tie-down strap assemblies; illustrative order only under 6307 90 98 99, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,800. Duty at 6% is £408. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,208, so it is £1,441.60. Import taxes total £1,849.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £408 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Webbing and stitching: compare material, width, length and joint construction with the approved sample; check cuts, fraying, skipped stitches and loose ends.

Ratchets and hooks: check engagement, locking and release, hook fit on the intended attachment point, burrs and coating damage.

Performance evidence: match the test report’s assembly photographs and components to the delivered goods; arrange agreed sample testing rather than judging strength by appearance.

Labels and packing: check ratings against the approved specification, legibility, batch identification, instructions and protection from damp.

What goes wrong

A factory can retain the same strap colour while changing webbing, thread, hooks or ratchets. The sample then ceases to represent the shipment. Specify the approved component combination and require approval before substitution. Inspect goods on arrival before releasing them for use.

A smooth-looking ratchet can jam, a hook can fail to seat on the buyer’s attachment point, and incomplete stitching can weaken the assembly. Retain a reference sample, record defects and separate affected goods while investigating. Agree these checks through quality inspection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ratchet straps from China?

The candidate woven-article code 6307 90 98 99 carries 6% duty in the supplied tariff record. Confirm that code for the complete strap assembly.

What should I put in a ratchet strap specification?

Specify webbing material, width and length, stitched joints, ratchet design, hook geometry, declared performance, labels and the actual cargo-securing application.

Is a webbing test report enough?

Ask for evidence covering the complete assembly supplied, including stitched joints, ratchet and hooks. Match the report’s components to the shipment.

Does the tariff suspension make ratchet straps duty-free?

The recorded suspension describes textile face masks, not ratchet straps. Budget using the candidate line’s 6% duty and confirm classification with your customs broker.
