UK duty on railway axleboxes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 8607 covers parts of railway or tramway locomotives or rolling stock. Locomotive axleboxes and their parts fall under 8607 91 10 00; axleboxes and their parts for other rolling stock fall under 8607 99 10 00. The table separates axleboxes from parts within these same codes.

Both axlebox lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measure or suspension. The tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances; confirm the declaration requirement with your customs broker. It also lists a cultural-object export licence control. Official guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement.

Confirm the commodity code using the vehicle application, drawings and the contents of the shipment, particularly where bearings are supplied separately. For bogies, wheelsets and other components, see the wider rolling stock parts guide.

Specify the axlebox and bearing interfaces

State the vehicle application, drawing revision, housing material, heat treatment, bearing designation and whether the order includes bearings, seals, covers and fasteners. Specify bearing-seat dimensions, tolerances, surface finish, cover alignment, mounting interfaces and lubrication arrangements. Include any temperature-sensor mounting features and corrosion protection.

Ask the buyer's rail engineer to establish whether the supplied product is an interoperability constituent. If it is, assessment is required before placing it on the UK market. Agree the operator's acceptance route and the evidence to accompany the axleboxes before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 10 replacement axlebox housings for railway wagons under 8607 99 10 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,600, so it is £1,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Bearing seats: measure bore size, roundness, alignment and surface finish against the approved drawing; check cover and seal interfaces.

Material and traceability: match housing markings to material and heat-treatment records; review the agreed casting-defect inspection reports.

Assembly: check bearing identity, seating, seals, lubrication passages and fasteners against the assembly specification.

Arrival condition: inspect for rust, impact damage and contamination; confirm protective caps, packing labels and inspection records match the delivered parts.

What goes wrong

A housing can match the external shape yet have an incorrect bearing fit, misaligned cover or incompatible seal groove. Casting defects, burrs and blocked lubrication passages can escape a visual check. Missing material traceability makes an apparently acceptable part difficult for the maintainer to accept.

Approve a sample with the intended bearing and cover, then agree the dimensional and defect inspection records for production. Keep damaged or untraceable arrivals separate pending review. Use the inspection guide to define what the inspector measures and records.
